The Arts and Crafts Garden (Shire Library)

Fun, Artistic, Historic
I really enjoy this book. I was looking for ideas about the kind of garden that would have been planted at my 1920 vintage home. The gardens featured are over and above what real people from my rural area would have been able to plant, but it sure is interesting to see what the style of plantings in vogue would have been for that time period. LOVE THE ART WORK. This book features some truly incredible watercolor paintings of many English gardens. They look like photos until examined closely. A real treat!

Interesting Book
I thought this book would be one of a larger and covering a different scale, but it is acceptable just the same.

Interesting but too small book
Pay attention to the dimensions and the page numbers! I didn't and was very surprised when this rather tiny book arrived. It would probably be quite a nice book if only it were slightly larger - the writing seems a bit squeezed and everything feels too tightly packed in (the opposite to the gardens it discusses!). It's a shame and a real missed opportunity to produce a very nice book; it covers a lot on the topic and has plenty of good (if a bit small) illustrations, but it comes precariously close to failing its primary purpose: being an object to read.(This was a review of the 80 page paperback edition by Shire Publications - 10 July 2013 - which officially measures an unmighty 14.9 x 2.5 x 21 cm... and yet, by my ruler, is even smaller at only 1cm thick!).

how to do it
I didn't know how my father did it and I always wanted to achieve the same effect. Here it is in a simple guide to an easily recognised style of gardening. It's encouraged to get out and find gardens to visit laid out in this style. sadly one lifetime isn't enough to learn it all but here it all is, economic and absorbing

Answered my questions.
I loved this book because:-I was interested in garden design and wanted to know what were they important parts of an Arts and Crafts Style. This book had the answers. There is a great list at the back of places to visit and books to read.It was a handy size, so easy to carry and read. The price was less than the cost of a magazine.

The content is good, but obviously smaller illustrations and not a lot
This book was much smaller and thinner than I imagined. I should have checked the size with a ruler. It is more of a large pamphlet than a book. Would not have bought it in a shop. The content is good, but obviously smaller illustrations and not a lot. Of it.

OK but muddled exposition.
I'm no clearer on what is truly an arts and crafts garden after reading this. It started well and should probably have finished after the first chapter. Clarity slowly evaporated as the chapters went on.
