The Return of the Light: Twelve Tales from Around the World for the Winter Solstice

Not a kids book but lovely stories.
Used this in conjunction with a lesson I did with my kids about the winter solstice. It ties in nicely with the Native American studies we had just completed as well since a few of the stories were tied to Native American folklore. The book is nice, with a lovely cover, but the stories were written in a way that were still a bit too advanced for my 6 year old to comprehend. My 9 year old enjoyed them though. I only read 4 of the stories to them as I plan to read new additional ones next year and then some the year after that. It arrived in good condition and very quickly.

This is THE Solstice book
Every winter, 11 days before the solstice, we begin reading this book. One story per night, with the final story being read on the solstice itself. The collection of stories from around the world is absolutely magnificent. The story sources span both the northern and southern hemispheres, as both have their own winter.I don't have more to say than that it's just a glorious collection of wonderful stories, appropriate for all ages.

Fun for our winter solstice activities
We grew up Catholic, but we're now atheists. Because of that, we sometimes feel like we've "lost" some of our "traditions", and we're actively working to build new ones with the kids. We read a story a night leading up to winter solstice. I don't think these stories would have worked if the kids were younger, but, at 7 and 9, the kids were able to understand most of the stories. I think this will be a good addition to our winter traditions for the next few years. My husband and I also appreciated the historical context.

I really liked this book.
This is a simple collection of stories from around the world with a common theme: losing and regaining light. I liked the author's complete respect for other cultures. I liked the organization. And I liked the stories she chose. This was a good read, one I'm going to keep, not one that will go the library used book sale any time soon.

My Go To Book for Yuletide Joy
Really enjoyable stories that made my Yuletide brighter and helped add some traditions for my family. I loved the list of song lyrics at the end that could be sung to traditional and familiar tunes. A book I will use for years to come.
