I can't resist a nice dive watch so when I saw this crop up on offer I thought I'd give it a go. Sea-Gull are all but unknown to most people as a watch brand but they have been around for 70 years and are one of the world's largest producers of mechanical watch movements. The specs on this model are in a different league to equivalently priced watches from Seiko, Citizen and Orient. I have a higher tier Orient Star and this easily matches the quality of that watch at approximately one third of the price. Features include, sapphire glass with cyclops, embossed and enameled caseback, 3 piece link oyster bracelet and a high beat movement that is a legal clone of the ETA 2824. The fit and finish is excellent with zero flaws and perfect alignment. It states 'divers' on the dial but I'm not sure if it's been officially tested to ISO standards. Bezel grip is a bit tricky as it has quite a low profile edge and has a tiny bit of backplay. Lume is a definite weak point and for a supposed certified diver it's not great but it does work. Only one slight concern and that is it's a little stiff to wind but I understand that may be a characteristic of the ST2130 movement. One thing to note is that this is quite a large watch so anyone with a wrist below 7 inches. It's fine on me but others might want to look elsewhere. I'll be monitoring the winding issue over the next week or so and hopefully it's just the way it is. Update: A week on and I let the watch wind itself down which took 44 hours so 4 hours above specification. Popped the crown and the winding mechanism was much easier to turn so I guessing it was at the limit. I've since read that 20 turns is about the max you want to go to and the movement will rapidly reach a full wind on reach. This movement shares similar architecture to it's Swiss counterparts and all suffer with sheared teeth on the ratchet gear. As for accuracy it's about 4 seconds slow per day so pretty good. All in all the watch is a solid piece and comes recommended. Update 2: The crown appears to have developed a fault in that it will not engage positively when setting the watch. Sadly have decided to return.☹️
