DESIGN – Sterling Silver Charles Rennie Mackintosh bracelet.

Very lovely despite being quite a loose fit for many (but possible to correct). Read on...
I chose this to try on Prime as I thought it would be perfect for my partner. She thought so on receiving it, but it is quite large fitting and there are no choices in sizing for this lovely iconic Rennee Mackintosh design.First impressions were that it was of good quality construction, and I felt that the only likely failure point might be the sprung hasp. On that basis I'm hoping a quality one was chosen for the bracelet..Nothing to suggest it isn't, and it really is lovely..The problem however was that my partner has quite a thin wrist and it was even possible for the bracelet to slide off her hand.A previous reviewer here who bought this same item in the past did mention that the manufacturer has increased the size of the bracelet since her first purchase, something I feel highly likely to be down to increasing average wrist sizes as time goes on.I guess this is an understandable strategy for a seller producing a standardised item. The bracelet did however look too loose on my partner's wrist, and so just to check we clasped it at the hoop before the last ingot of the bracelet, which reduced the fitting size by 1/8 (the bracelet having 8 joined ingots). It fitted & looked absolutely perfect at this size and so we decided to modify it (rather than send it back for a refund). Please note that doing so either yourself or via a jeweller will then obviously invalidate any guarantee, although it really is an easy modification even with basic DIY skills. The first stage was to remove the last ingot, but not the final small linking hoop that attaches it to the rest of the bracelet (as this will be used as the final hasping connection). As the silver is a soft metal and I wished to retain the removed ingot to used as a necklace adornment, I wrapped it in a thin piece of cotton material to protect it, then used thin nosed pliers to gently grip the ingot to be removed (within the cotton) close to the end. I then removed the hooped end of it by sawing gently with a junior hacksaw, but leaving a fairly smooth & tidy edge in order that the removed ingot edge could be abraded smooth to use as a separate adornment. The next stage is to remove the waste end bit of ingot from the connecting hoop that will then be used to secure the bracelet with the hasp. This can be done just by nipping the piece to be cut away with the thin nosed pliers and gently sawing with the same junior hacksaw until the hoop of it is fully severed. As stated the silver is soft and it won't take many strokes or much pressure.Once fully severed the soft silver will part enough to remove from the final connecting hoop simply by levering apart with your fingernail. This will complete the modification and the bracelet will then be exactly as before but will fit smaller wrists far better. Obviously check the fit as we did (above) prior to undertaking any modification. The loss of the one ingot is absolutely not noticeable on the bracelet when worn, plus it does really look far better if sitting a little closer generally to the wrist. The removed ingot can then be used as a necklace adornment. We added it to a nice swallow adornment necklace my partner already had as described below, but a fine chain can be purchased if wishing to adorn the ingot on its own.All that is then required to finish the seperate ingot is to smooth any roughness remaining from the sawing of the ingot in the first stage of removal. To do this simply abrade gently with a fine grade emery paper to remove roughness and to ensure a natural and flowing edge at the small point the end was removed.A fine grade really will leave an invisible finish. The ingot will still of course have the remaining hasp ingot which can be then thread onto a necklace. The necklace chain will need to have a hasping hoop end that will pass through the ingot hoop, and indeed most fine chains can do this easily. If it is a tight squeeze (as it was with my partner's necklace chain), the ingot hoop can actually be doubled in diameter by gently squeezing it in the thin nosed pliers until it flattens out. This also allows the ingot to hang down better naturally once threaded. In this way we have ended up with a beautiful perfect fitting bracelet, plus a necklace that links perfectly to the bracelet down to the removed ingot...As stated, the modification is entirely the risk of the purchaser, but I found it extremely easy.A jeweller would of course do the whole thing for you for a modest fee, but if confident there really isn't that much to it (it took me 20 minutes).Hope that helps someone... :)

A small information leaflet about Charles Rennie Mackintosh inside the box would have made this present perfect.

Beautiful bracelet
This was a birthday present, which I was thrilled to receive. I love anything Charles Rennie Mackintosh inspired and this bracelet is no exception - it's beautiful. The only difficulty I have is that, because I want to wear it on my right wrist, I have to have help putting it on as the clasp seems to be the wrong way round. But, having said that, it's not the end of the world. I'm still thrilled to bits with it.A couple of weeks ago, I lost my original bracelet on holiday so my husband has bought me another one. Unfortunately, since he bought the first one the size has changed from 7.5" to 8", which, for me, is almost too big - I can slip it off without undoing it. I still love it and will, obviously, wear it but, I'm going to have to very vigilant when I do, especially when I go out.
