Like every one of John McDougall's books I have seen to date, McDOUGALL PROGRAM is a worthwhile book, on an extremely important subject: personal nutrition, and nutritional reform - personal and national.John McDougall - a physician - is a prominent and respected national spokesperson on the important subject of healthful personal nutrition, a lifetime passion. Only book on plant-based diet that you will ever need, better than Starch Solution.
Our family started a plant-based diet a few months ago and it has changed our lives for the better. I started reading anything I could get my hands on to learn more and make sure we were eating a variety of foods to get all the nutrients we need. When I came across this book, I didn't expect to be blown away by how ahead of his time Dr. McDougall has been. Everything you need to start and maintain a plant-based diet is in this book. The couple that he follows through the 10-day program and how it works for them brought all the ideas into action and how you may see similar results. This book was written in the 90's and it seems that everyone now just copies his ideas.I am in my early 50's and was having so much joint pain and strange ailments popping up. I knew something had to change so I gave it a try. I am shocked how simple it was to make the switch. I've lost 14 lbs. in 4 months (148 to 134lbs.) and I feel that all I've done is eat lots of potatoes! My husband is off all heart medications, my daughter's reflux and headaches are gone, and my joints are back to normal. I highly recommend this book and don't be put off by the date it was published, everything is still relevant today and now there is just more research to support it.

Saved my husband's life. Fantastic book.
My husband grew up on a ranch, roping cows. He ate meat 3 times a day and thought I was crazy suggesting a vegan diet. He also, however, had monthly shaking chills and fevers to 104. Unbeknownst to us at the time, he has a genetic liver disorder. We thought it was autoimmune hepatitis. In any case, I said let's do this 12 day program. We'll check your blood tests day 1 and day 12 and see what happens. His cholesterol went from 199 to 163 in 12 days and his liver enzymes became for normal for the first time since he knew he was sick. He hasn't had an episode of fever and chills since, except one time when he thought he could forego the vegan diet. He paid the price for that and has since discovered that the body doesn't like ingesting toxins again once it has gotten rid of them.The book is fantastic as it has shopping lists and recipes for every meal, great for a novice like me. The Onion, Lettuce and Tomato recipe was not enough food for us (I recommend adding hummus), but all the other recipes were great.I encourage everyone to try the 12 day challenge, preferably testing their blood before and after. You will be shocked how good you feel and how much better your labs are. For us, irritations such as our heart burn, constipation, acne (me…yes as an adult), menstrual cramps (again, me) went away. Our allergies markedly improved. Even more important, it protects us from dementia, cancer, heart disease, autoimmune disorders and osteoporosis.

A stepping stone for newbies to the lifestyle
I wouldn't call it a recipe book per se. There is a few recipes. However this is a stepping stone as far as food is concerned for the newly transitioned wfpb person. The book is very informative and gives you many ideas and examples on what to eat breakfast lunch and dinner. There are recipes in the book I have yet to try since I did just buy it. I've been eating wfpbno for nearly a year and was hoping for some newer recipes it was a letdown for me on that part. The information is plentiful as well as many lists of acceptable packaged foods that are oil free. If you are new to wfpb or you want to learn more info on the why of eating this way, this is a good buy.

Bring on the McDougallers!
Great book. Full of lots of medical and health information.Note that the McDougall forum has the the contents of the low fat vegan lifestyle program on the website for free, but the book has far more info in it re anecdotal evidence and research.I didn't realise that there was a weightloss version of the book (which is more or less the same but a bit more stringent). The forum/website also has details of that plan on too, free of charge.Definitely a book worth getting.

I can't give you this information yet because I have not fully read the two books that I ordered. The reviews of other people have read it it is excellent.
