Q: Do you have to use the credit card reader or can you leave it not working?

There are two versions of the machine. One version has the credit card reader the other does not have the reader. If you purchase the machine without the reader then you'll save on upfront cost and not have to worry about disabling the credit card reader. Q: Can it be used to receive another type of currency, like the Colombian peso?

It cannot use other currencies. There are some token that it can be programmed to take.

Q: How does the card reader work? I am assuming it needs some kind of internet access?

It runs off of cellular so you're required to sign up for their plan. This is not a plug and play machine. You need to contact USA technologies and set up an account and there are also monthly fees, transaction fees and other steps attached for their service that is not disclosed when you purchase this item.
