Standard Catalog of Pontiac, 1926-2002

Part of the excellent "Standard Catalog of..." series of titles, this is a very complete account of every model sold by Pontiac up until 2002 (it won't have the modern GTO). You get a breakdown of all the different body styles with prices, curb weights, engine info, some ID numbers. Some model years have limited coverage of major options with their prices. I own both editions, but it is much better to get the print version since the Kindle edition doesn't handle photos and certain tables of information. That said, you cannot search in the print edition, though with the chronological organization of the book you don't even need that.

This was for my husband, who owned some Pontiac cars back in the late sixties. The pictures & production figures are VERY NICE. He got the book recently, & said "IT'S COOL!!!"---

I love the book. It's very infomative and a great read. The illustrations and pricing guide are very helpful. If you are a Pontiac fan, then this book is a good source of information.

Purchased this book for my husband, Don. He finally found a 1965 Tempest Classic Car, and this book gives a lot of information about this rare car; he loves it!

Die bekanntesten Pontiac-Fahrer dürften in Deutschland die durch Film und Fernsehen bekannten Leinwandhelden Detektiv Rockford (James Garner) und "Bandit" (Burt Reynolds in den "Schlitzohr"-Filmen) mit ihren Pontiac Firebird sein. Pontiac-Automobile gab es von 1926 bis 2010. Pontiac gehört zusammen mit Oldsmobile und Saturn zu den Marken von GM, die im Rahmen von Sparprogrammen des Konzerns geopfert wurden - schade!John Gunnell gibt in dem Handbuch "Standard Catalog of Pontiac" einen akribischen Überblick über alle Pontiac-Modelle von 1926 bis 2002 und beschreibt auch die Typen der Vorgängermarke Oakland von 1908 bis 1931. Ein kurzer Abriss schildert auch die Historie beider Fabrikate. Abgerundet wird der Band - wie bei den Standard Catalogs üblich - mit einem ausführlichen Price Guide. Zu allen Modellen werden die wesentlichen technischen Daten und Modifikationen angegeben und die verschiedenen Sonderausstattungen mit ihren Preisen aufgeführt. Etwa 1000 Schwarzweiß-Fotos vermitteln einen guten Überblick vom Äußeren der Pontiac-Automobile. All das ist in der Informationsfülle kaum zu überbieten, und nicht ohne Grund gehören die Standard Catalogs zur unentbehrlichen Ausstattung amerikanischer Autohändler. Natürlich ist so ein Typenhandbuch nicht gerade ein bibliophiles Schmuckstück, aber das soll es auch gar nicht sein. So ein Katalog hat die Aufgabe, konzentriert und möglichst vollständig zu informieren. Dieser Aufgabe werden die Standard Catalogs hervorragend gerecht.Bedauerlich ist nur, dass diese Papierform der Kataloge langsam ausstirbt. Deshalb reicht der Dokumentationszeitraum dieses 2012 gedruckten Bandes auch nur bis 2002. Auf der Seite von Krause Publications findet man die Information, dass die Inhalte der Katalogwerke inzwischen hauptsächlich digital als CD angeboten werden. Nach meiner Auffassung kann so eine Scheibe ein Buch nur sehr unvollkommen ersetzen, aber das ist halt der Zug der Zeit. Und dabei gab es bis vor kurzem sogar farbige Standard Catalogs, z.B. über den Pontiac Firebird oder die Ferrari-Straßenfahrzeuge.

Der Pontiac-Fan bekommt hier viele Informationen, gegliedert nach Modelljahren und Modellen. Die viele s/w-Bilder sind nicht der Brüller, helfen aber (weitestgehend) bei der Orientierung. Leider ist das Buch voller Bild-, Text- und Daten-Fehler, weshalb man sich im Pontiac-Lineup bereits gut auskennen sollte, um die Fehlinformationen erkennen zu können. Dann bekommt man viele Detailinformationen, die man woanders nicht in dieser kompakten Form findet.
