Brunner the Bounty Hunter (Warhammer Chronicles)

Was about to give up on Fantasy....
I have to tell you, the fantasy reading selection is pretty slim picking for a good story let alone good characters. There is a ton of stuff to go through and sometimes it is just too daunting. About a year ago I had honestly given up on trying to find really good fantasy then a buddy of mine gave this book Brunner by CL Werner that he picked up at a half price going out of business sale for one of the big chain stores, he said give this book a chance. And I did...and what a wonderful book this turned out to be. A really cool character with a stoic attitude and a weapon for every occasion! Sure he is alot like most of the characters that many other reviewers have mentioned but I think he can stand on his own. For me I just read him like he was presented, with no conceived notions and let him develop under my very nose, And that he did and he did not disappoint, I really like CL's writing style and how he brought Brunner to life and gave him a bunch of stories and situations to strut his bad self. Never boring and never slow a real page turner.I will search out CL's other offerings and know I wont be disappointed, I suggest you do the same, because you certainly wouldnt want Brunner to show up at your door and ask you why you havent lol

Terrific Book
This is about as good as it gets. The stories are engaging and entertaining. Most highly recommend this book and it goes without saying, the Warhammer Chronicles collection as a whole, for those interested in well written "escape fiction". The main character is very well developed, well written! Very easy to read, very hard to put down. Enjoy!

Quite good
Written by C. L. Werner, Brunner the Bounty Hunter: Omnibus consists of two short story collections ("Blood Money" and "Blood and Steel") and one novel ("Blood of the Dragon"). While they're a part of Games Workshop's "Warhammer Fantasy" franchise, these stories are generic in that they could be set in just about any fantasy universe out there. You can enjoy them without any previous knowledge of the setting.I'll get one thing straight right away: these books are badly written. Werner spends a lot of time repeating himself, often states the obvious, shoehorns useless descriptions into the narrative, doesn't bother with character development, and uses a lot of clichés. At times it reads like fanfiction. That being said, the atmosphere and the sheer entertainment factor of these tales more than makes up for their literary deficiencies. Who cares about clichés, when the entire concept is a fantasy rendition of that most clichéd of genres - the spaghetti westerns? There is no character development whatsoever, but then who needs character development when the protagonists - Brunner himself included - have all went through their defining moments and emotional scarring long before the events depicted in these stories even began? The writing style is underwhelming, but then what did you expect from an expanded universe series penned by a writer-for-hire?Another thing you should keep in mind before buying this omnibus is that these tales are very, very dark. While other writers can sometimes make the Old World seem like a land populated with great heroes and mysterious sorcerers, Werner depicts it as a truly horrible place to live in, utterly devoid of anything resembling honor or compassion. The main character is a brooding, murderous sociopath whose few redeeming qualities quickly run dry in face of the atrocities he commits. While his enemies are generally far worse, quite a few are sympathetic and innocent. This stuff really wasn't written for sensitive readers. If you've never read any of the "Warhammer Fantasy" books, I recommend you avoid this and start with "Blackhearts" or "Tales of the Old World" instead. If you're a long-time fan of the setting, you'll want to have "Brunner the Bounty Hunter" in your collection. Overall, this omnibus is a great buy if you're looking for a fun book to pass the time. If you're like me, and you love morbid tales filled with downer endings and pyrrhic victories, you'll find this anthology to be more then worth the price.

The Old World at its best
Love this author, he excels at writing realistic, gritty, anti-hero characters. The plots and hunts were fun and really take you beyond the standard formula of bounty hunter hunts bounty, with lots of layered and fleshed out characters.Makes me really miss classic Warhammer Fantasy novels - Age of Sigmar just doesn't do it justice.

Best Warhammer character!
My favorite character of the Warhammer universe.I like Brunner even more than the team of Felix Jaeger and Gotrek Gurnisson.I am a steadfast, forthright and integritous man.I see myself in Brunner. He has a personal code of honor like myself. He holds himself to it just as I do to mine.I hope to be able to endure life at least half as well as Brunner does his.I have now read this omnibus four times and will probably do so at least that many more times in the future.I like this character!

Wow, def. a must read !
Got this book for my sons birthday after reading the reviews and was glad I did after reading it, Especially since I had only been reading the 40K Warhammer series (Which my son got me into) and not the straight Warhammer books !

A pleasant change
I usually read Sci-Fi as opposed to Fantasy. I started to find most Fantasy books had the typical Elf, Dwarf and man on some quest or another along the lines of Lord of the Rings or it's many clones...This was a great book, i loved it. Brunner was funny, and what an anti-hero. it kept me wanting more and may have turned me back to fantasy more.
