Mechanism failed on the first day
We purchased this unit in January 2013. After taking it out of the box, we tried it on a couple of different chairs and a couch. We used it approximately 10 times the first day.On softer seating, it does sink in to the cusion a bit as expected. The operation of paddles used to control up and down movement were impeded by cushion. The paddles are removable, but again, the cusion will impede insertion and removal of those paddles. It will lift a person up about halfway to a standing position. It will not lift you completely out of your seat.It is rather narrow, and can become uncomfortable after extended sitting periods. After our tests of the unit in various seating situations, spaced out over several hours, the unit stopped functioning properly. The seat would rise up under load only about a third of the way, and stop moving. The motor was still running however. The unit did rise up completely with no load. It would lower all the way whether under load or not.We allowed the unit to cool, but that had no impact on the faulty operation. The unit is rated for up to 300 lbs, and we both are under that weight.Amazon accepted the item in return for a full refund.

Great for post-surgery recovery!
This device saved my father after his valve replacement. He could not use his arms to get up per the after surgery directions. He has weak legs and would have been unable to get out of his chair. This device can lift my 235lb father easily. It moves very slow but gets the job done. It also lowers him back into the chair. Make sure you only use it as a temporary device to avoid further weakening arms and legs.

Helps you stand up, but is like sitting on concrete.
Uncomfortable. I added a three inch cushions to this and it was still too hard. IT worked GREAT for helping my mom to a standing position, but it is not possible to sit on it for more than a few minutes.

NOT RETURNABLE!!! and bad
My elderly father could not reach or operate the flimsy levers, the lift angle was bad for his height and he said it was very uncomfortable to sit on. But I missed the part about it not being returnable b/c I have never seen that before on anything I ever bought from Amazon before and now stuck with expensive unusable item. Don't buy unless somehow, by magic I guess, you are absolutely certain it will work for you.

Good product
This product is great. I like that it came with two handles for both sides so if you are right or left handed. I installed both handles so that I could be on either side of the chair and still operate while assisted my grandmother out of her kitchen table chair. I RECOMMEND TO NOT PUT IN A CHAIR WITH WHEELS! ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE USING THIS FOR YOURSELF OR ASSISTING SOMEONE. The chair can roll out from under you or your loved one. If you have a chair with wheels you want this in I would then suggest you make sure the chair is against a non moving structure like a wall to ensure you don't fall. My rating was low because I do wish it went higher but it still raises enough to help my back from always lifting my grandmother. And the seat could be a little more comfortable. I made a padded seat cushion for it but you could also buy one.

Works well for sit to stand transfers from recliner chair.
This was the perfect answer to my problem of helping my elderly mother with Alzheimer's disease get out of her large Lazy boy recliner chair. I agreed with the other reviews in that the cushion is not that plush, so I added a Roho cushion on top and that seems to be ok. I have been gentle with the handle control and it seems to be holding up well. She can't shift her position well so the electronic control is ideal. 2 weeks into using it as the motor is still working well for us.

Not for someone that REALLY needs help...
Purchased with intent of a Father's Day present -- Had to return.First, it's 'made well' (i.e. sturdy) but it's very uncomfortable. A person can not sit on this for long periods of time. If it's going to be of use, you need to sit on it...so...Second, it doesn't work well in upholstered furniture -- it works a little better on a hard surface such as a wooden chair.Who (especially the elderly) sits in a hard chair for long periods of time? Finally, although it does lift you up off the seat (a bit), it doesn't actually get you in an upright or standing position or one that would allow you to go from point A to point B. With regard to my father, it got him up about as far as he is currently able to manage on his own (when he doesn't totally konk out) but it doesn't actually go that extra mile of getting him UP. Even if he were KONKED OUT totally, it doesn't help enough to get him from point A to B...I think the Reclining Chair might be better. They are more money and that's the ONLY chair you can sit in if you have issues but...this doesn't do the trick. To be honest, we haven't tried the chair (so don't take this as my 'review') but we know other people who have that say it's good. The only other option are our EMTs -- so far they've been great when we've had problems!
