Spicy umami booster for sauces and recipes. Absolutely fantastic on eggs!
This artisanal medium-hot chili sauce in a little can is labeled "Sun Grains" and is full of big beautiful flavorful moist red chunks of pepper. The ingredients also include mushroom and garlic, probably for umami flavor, and MSG, definitely for umami. This has a surprisingly "meaty" and assertive umami flavor (no there's no meat in it). And don't be fooled by the salsa like appearance. I have not had another hot sauce quite like it.Sun Grains Hot Sauce is definitely designed for culinary use and is perfect for adding umami, capsaicin spice and color. The little pop top cans are a very convenient format for using this sauce to add flavor in home recipes. The size of this is a little smaller than a "Fancy Feast" cat food can. When I received this hot sauce I was about to make an Asian salad involving snow fungus mushroom and cucumber, and the recipe called for a type of chili sauce I did not have. I used this and turned out all right but the strong umami, which is often such an enjoyable flavor, didn't seem quite right for a salad. So next I scrambled an egg with a splash of half-and-half and smothered it with a somewhat liberal amount of red chili goodness. This sauce has some heat but it was really just right with the egg. Absolutely amazing, ten out of ten, I will be doing that again for certain and I highly recommend Sun Grains Hot Sauce as a perfect topping for eggs.I will also be finding some uses for this in sauces and skillet dishes. The combination of heat with a good fresh pepper taste and robust umami is versatile. And I believe it would work very well as a single serving spicy pasta sauce, perhaps with added olive oil and parmesan, and any protein you like. The can is very small, but I live by myself and am quite likely to use it that way.Sun Grains Hot Sauce from China is about $3 per can and that's not cheap. The seller's description of it as "artisanal" seems fair and this could easily be worth it to you as a premium topping for scrambled eggs. I don't think you are going to be disappointed if you try that.

Tasty, but More Like a Mild Salsa Than Hot Sauce
To me, this felt more like an Asian-style salsa than a hot sauce—it wasn’t spicy at all, but it was flavorful. We tried it on a noodle stir fry and really enjoyed the taste.I was a little concerned the mushrooms would give it a strange texture, but it was actually very smooth, more like a salsa. The biggest drawback for me is the packaging—it comes in cans, so you either have to use the whole thing at once or transfer it to another container to avoid the metal reacting with leftovers.Overall, it’s not truly a “hot sauce,” but it is a tasty and versatile condiment if you’re looking for flavor rather than heat.

Tasty
I eat something spicy with every meal, so I was really interested in trying this artisanal spicy chili sauce. It comes in small cans, and while the chili isn’t very hot by my standards, it has a delicious earthy flavor, thanks to the mushrooms and other seasonings. The umami from the mushrooms balances out the heat, making it perfect for grilling, stir-fries, marinades, or even as a topping for eggs. So far I have added it to my fried rice as well as to my pasta sauce with ground beef and it added an extra dimension to my meals. However, as mentioned previously, it is not very spicy so you will probably be disappointed if you are looking for intense heat. However, it is still good! The flavor is bold and flavorful, with nice chunks of red pepper, garlic, and a “meaty” umami taste so I recommend it. As a note, keep in mind the date on the can is the manufacturer date (it has an “M” to indicate that). I wasn’t able to find where the actual expiration date is.

Flavorful but not hot
I felt this was a more earthy version of the sambal chili paste you normally get in the store. You get the umami of the mushrooms and the peppers, but the chili is more of a back seat flavor in a good way. This would be really good in a marinade or spread, you can be generous without worrying about blasting your taste buds.It was really delicious on some rice bowls we had, but it was not fiery or hot.

Not hot enough for me
The media could not be loaded. I do like spicy hot sauce, and I put hot sauce on lots of things. I was really excited to try this new brand of sauce because I have never tried any thing like that before. Unfortunately, it is not the kind of spicy sauce that I like. I can’t really explain why, probably because I don’t get used to the taste yet, it has a mild spicy flavor that is not strong enough for me.The 6 small can are very convenient to use. When I received it, I opened up one can and ate it alone. It was okay, but I didn’t really like it neither. To be clear, I am not saying they are bad, it is just me, I am sure lots of people will really like it. Also, I put it on other things when I needed an extra hot sauce. I think it tasted better when cooked together with other foods.Overall, although I don’t really like it because it is not hot enough for me. I am sure lots of people will like the mild flavor.

Mildly hot and very delicious
It's a good deal to have 6 cans of chili source under 20 bucks. Each can is quite small, the chili isn't very hot at least from my family's perspective. Mixing with mushroom and other seasonings, it's very delicious. In fact, we finished a whole can after a single dinner. My only complain is the expiration date isn't clearly marked, even though the manufacture date is printed on the can.
