Soak it in a glass of water first until it turns bright blue. Then push it into the soil of your potted plant down to the root level. It will slowly turn from blue to white as the plant dries out. I've tested it against my electronic moisture tester and this thing is spot on correct. You will be amazed at how much more or how much less you will water your plants when you use this as your guide. And it's so easy. No more jamming your finger deep into the soil to test the moisture. No more getting out the moisture meter and going around to all the plants to see who needs what. Now I just get out my hose and everyone with a white Sustee reading gets a good soaking.

These are okay, but now that I know what I need & looking for, I will buy the ones that are better made, more accurate & easier to read, even if they are more expensive. Remember, you get what you pay for & I think these aren't worth it.

I placed this in one of my two African violets (which were purchased from the same store on the same day, and which sat next to each other in separate but identical pots). Within a few weeks, an apparent fungus (as I've never seen before) developed and quickly covered the soil. The other violet, is thankfully unaffected.Other than apparently infecting my plant, the moisture signaling of the device worked fine.

I can see from afar if my favorite plant has enough moisture! This "Water meter" is so handy to have! I can see even from a distance if my plant is enjoying just the right amount of moisture. I wish I had about a dozen more, and eventually I will have them! They really work!

What a waste of money. It is a cotton like substance that is rolled in what looks like a ink pen. I pulled off the top off the pen and could never get the cotton back in the pen correctly. Threw it away and bought a metal one that will last.

Didn't work. Maybe came broken. Don't know, but it's a miss. Received a refund at once. So, thanks people for that.

It's a piece of junk. There are no instructions except in Chinese.
