so far it the never put down book, I give to a 5 thumbs up!!!!!!!! and now I just got done reading and that book was OMG all the places that Francis Kader went to u went with him it was like u where his warrior.

While not as refined and subtle as some of the works by the authors I listed in the title, this was a competently written, captivating and entertaining introduction to a series. I found this book because of the inclusion of its cover in a list of "terrible kindle book covers", but the synopsis and reviews convinced me to give it a shot. Within 10 pages I was drawn in, and could not put it down until I finished.Mr Townsend takes some shortcuts with the narrative, and his female characters tend to be more placeholders than anything else - but the effect is reminiscent of 40's-50's hardboiled detective stories. I think in some ways its more a result of the development of the character than any specific intent of the writer. Francis Kader, the main character, shows himself to be racist, misogynist, and very much a privileged jerk... but I don't see this a shortcoming in the story, but instead as success in the author's ability to make a flawed character come to life. And the character does grow and better himself through the events in the story.The story itself is packed with action, a creative magic system, and a complex web of shifting enemies/allies. The locales and details of technology and culture are spot-on, and the places where the story touches history are well chosen. There's a dark thread of humor through the story, and some interesting ideas about the series' mythology are hinted at.Well worth reading, and I look forward to buying more books by Mr Townsend!

Some books lose me after a few pages. This was one book that I read all the way through. It did not turn out the way I thought it would when I first started and to me that is the sign of a good book.
