From Booklist Gr. 4-6. Other volumes in the Skateboarder's Guide to Skate Parks, Half-Pipes, Bowls, and Obstacles series offer advice on sharpening skating skills and even persuading local officials to build a skate park. In this one, Hocking provides diagrams and instructions for constructing six relatively simple wooden boxes and ramps. Opening with an earnest chapter called "Safety and Adult Supervision," and closing with lists of helpful books and Web sites, this is a good choice for young carpenters less experienced than those targeted by Kevin Thatcher's Thrasher Presents How to Build Skateboard Ramps, Halfpipes, Boxes, Bowls, and More (2001). Hocking's book may not carry the Thrasher magazine imprimatur, but he does have street cred: he "lives and skateboards in New York City" and coedited Life & Limb: Skateboarders Write from the Deep End (2004), an anthology for adults.
