not teh best of the series
not teh best of the series, and many of the pictures used to illustrate the themes are also in other books in the series, but it is still a lovely book

OK, but a bit disappointing too
I bought this book out of interest as a professional astrological psychologist, interested in astrological symbolism. I found it OK but not as good as I'd expected. The way the book is laid out makes it possible to pack a lot of information into a small space and there is a great deal of explanatory text around each picture. I would rather have had the picture on its own to look at; the text tends to be distracting. Battistini is an art critic and whilst she may be very knowledgeable in the area of symbolism and allegory in art, I would be surprised if she has the same depth of understanding of astrology. I found several anomalies in the astrological information offered and after a while its presentation started to read very much like a quick cut and paste job with a strong formulaic flavour. I can't speak with the same authority on the sections devoted to Magic and Alchemy, but as there is an overlap with astrology into these subjects, the explanatory text could indeed be useful here. The book is packed with art works, and although their reproduction is relatively small to fit into the size of the book, they do provide a starting point for further exploration.

Lines point to elements of the picture and you read them. Don't hope for direct insight, you'll have to find it on your own.
If you're familiar with the book series, and you want this subject, just buy it. The only complaint I might have for the series is the repeated same art pieces for different uses in each example. Also that the identification arrows/lines don't often address the most interesting and provocative aspects of any particular example painting. But still, there's nothing quite like this series of art examination books on the market as far as my limited knowledge really knows. My only critique would be "BIGGER!" but that would be a whole methodological restructuring on the part of the printers.

As I said with Nature and its Symbols...
I believe these series of books are one of the greatest iconographic dictionaries!Having said that, I believe anyone who uses them should consider that they are only a tool, and not a sole bibliographic source.
