Legion: The Horus Heresy, Book 7

Spy novel set in 40k
Abnett is on point with characters you'll love and despise. The first off the Horus Heresy books to focus on intrigue over martial might, it's a great journey.

Another Legion I did not care about, now treasured
Legion’s early chapters gave the impression of Black Hawk Down. Imperial troops fighting in a back water world having underestimated their enemy. However that was quickly subverted to more of a Borne movie revolving around John Grammaticus. The decisions the Alpha Legion must make are impossible, and shapes their entire character. Now I must know more about them.

I am Alpharius, and so are you.
As long as you don't go into this expecting a full Alpha Legion story, or a Space Marine legion story in general, this is a great read. Dan 'the man' Abnett, everybody. 4/5 only because there's a lot of typos that were probably pretty easily missed.

It was alright
Enjoyed this one quite a bit, although it was a little difficult to follow the story as the places seemingly jumped from side to side. Not as much a focus on the Astartes as I'd like, but still an overall good read.

Wow.
This has been the least epic, and by far the least in keeping with the series, thematically, so far but by far the most enjoyable. Fulcrum was good but damn.

Wheels within wheels....
Here I was expecting just another installment of the Horus Heresy saga, military SF at its finest ... and all of a sudden a John le Carre novel broke out....Dan Abnett never disappoints. Great characters, a fiendishly complicated plot with mysterious twists and turns, and an ambiguous cliffhanger of an ending leaving the reader with a feeling of unresolved dramatic tension and suspenseful dread.

Worth it in the end
There were a few times I just wanted everyone to die in this book and get it over with so I could move onto the next. The 147 layers of subterfuge were getting to be too much to keep track of unless you read this book in one setting. Abnett, in my opinion, is good for dragging a story out for four hundred pages, then tidying up all the plot lines is the last five pages, which usually has me asking "WTF?" But this time, he took his time in revealing secrets, long enough to be enjoyed until the next one was revealed. The last quarter of this book made the first three totally worth it, and redeemed the book's rating to five star

A pleasant surprise
Maybe surprise is the wrong word, because I love Dan Abnett’s first installment in the heresy series. This book I loved even more, because it is significantly more human than any other novel. Yes Loken and Torgaddon had a great relationship that was quite human, but it doesn’t hold a torch to the Geno 5-2 Chilead. This was the first time I felt like I was reading about soldiers and not stalwart religious zealots in the emperors crusade (a bit ironic, that). Before I ramble too long about my love for Pete and Bronzi, I’ll just say that this book is an absolute delight and if you’re bored early on, just stick with it and you’ll be happy you did.Ps. Abnett’s afterword has me chortling at my desk, so give it a read.

Dan Abnett Book. What do you Expect
It’s Dan Abnett. It’s another fantastic book. This one took me four hours and fifty seven minutes from start to finish. I related to both the Alpha Legion And Imperial forces. Just a great well thought out and delivered read. Having served the colours in my younger years I can appreciate the loyalty and comradeship being part of a military unit brings and I think DA has captured the essence of this perfectly in this book, probably more so than other authors of the same genre.Ian McGregor is another talented author of WW2 military fiction who is also well worth a read and who captures this ethos equally well.

Good but not Abmett’s Best
I read the Horus Heresy books because the first by Dan Abnett was excellent. Entries by other authors in the series sometimes lived up to that, others less so. In Legion it’s obvious why Abnett got Book 1, even if this one isn’t as good. It’s still excellent. Not perfect, but sequels rarely are.

A nice change of pace.
At this point in my HH journey, I really wasnt expecting this. Legion has way more of an espionage vibe to it that the previous entries and a pretty different tone. Less bolter porn and more exploration of the universe. This served as my introduction to the Alpha Legion as well and I am keen to learn more.

Great story
I have recently started getting back in to 40K but just from a story and lore perspective. This is a very good story and worth a read as I am finding with all other Heresy stories no matter which author has produced the book. The loss of one star is purely down to the cost of the book vs how many pages , it's just a bit expensive.
