If you only have one book for NYC, I suggest this one!
I visited NYC for 5 days in October 2015. This was my only guide. I was a solo traveler.Decades ago, I was familiar with the City. My last trip was 16 years ago.The tone of the writing is most humane. Genuine.I read it all before my trip, skipping over food and lodging information, as I had my lodging.Amazing the tips I "absorbed" by that read-through. Of immediate use, information on the lime-green taxis. I also was "aware" that the Metropolitan Museum of Art had a rooftop area for viewing sunsets, especially (weather permitting). One thing that has changed since printing is the 7 day subway-metro pass, and definitely buy it! $32 in Oct. 2015. I stupidly did not immediately buy it, thinking I could buy separately, cheaper. Not so! Just buy it. This book also made me aware that sometimes the Metro Cards don't work, so, when mine didn't, I knew that could be the case (several times I simply climbed underneath the turnstiles. My card was replaced when an attendant was present.) You buy it at machines, supposedly will take credit cards or cash. Be aware that machines may not be functioning for one of the other. Sometimes when you use the Metro Card for a bus, you have to get a paper ticket (no cost). Ask the locals.Locals helped me over and over again! Very friendly. Another "development" is that the Whitney Museum of American Art has opened in its new location. (I took the A train and walked the rest of the way, last part most picturesque.) I did walk the Brooklyn Bridge, though I chose to walk from the Brooklyn side, so that Manhattan was in front of me. Did Staten Island Ferry. And Empire State Building. At 11 pm, virtually no lines.A gorgeous building, and upbeat, cheerful staff. Did 3 operas and 5 museums. Don't miss the Frick! I decided on no New York pass. Realize that seniors get discounts anyway. My background is Art History. I learned so much from the audio guides at the museums! The one at the Frick is free.Amazingly, I felt very safe in all places, at all times.

A guiding light
This book has no pictures, only a detachable map at the back. Places are simply rated on a scale of one to three stars. And it is absolutely sensational. The author Pauline Frommer is a native New Yorker, which lends her credibility. But more than that, she writes with a critic’s eye. She doesn’t just give the obligatory who, what, and where. She adds her own take on things, and her biases work to the reader’s advantage, making the book both engrossing and instructive. For example, Frommer recommends that visitors to the MOMA start from the top floor, since that’s where all the juicy classics (“Starry Night”) are housed. So when I went (on a Friday, which Frommer mentions are free) I felt I was optimizing my time. Not only that, but she personalizes her summaries of different places, many of which resonated with me. Her description of the 9/11 memorial and museum is thorough and touching. Her description of one restaurant’s food was droll—apparently, the food was so spicy that her resulting dizziness caused her to almost run into a telephone pole. Fun!Reading the book is entertainment enough. Sometimes I catch myself thumbing through the book, just to see what read what she has to say about a place I have no intention of every visiting. She covers hotels, restaurants, and touristy places, from the obvious to the obscure, in well-organized chapters. Location, website, contact info, prices, and how to get there via public transport are included at the end of every summary. There are guides on how to visit NY if you have limited time, sidebars with useful morsels, and an affection for the city that is apparent in every line.Plus, it’s softcover and lightweight, so you can take it with you everywhere. I know I do.

Good Guide.
This is an informative tour book written by a NYC resident and family member of the famous international Guide Book author. It doesn't necessarily lend itself too well to the occasional tourist. The map is very useful and was the best of the several I purchased. The Subway map on the rear of the map was the one I used to supplement my NYC MTA APP for my iPhone ( I found this app, which has real-time location reference, VERY USEFUL).There are other authors who worked better for me once I got to town and had to make adjustments, but this was a very good selection for me.

and gives great subway and taxi info as well
This book has been SO helpful with planning our New York trip, I can't even tell you.It has restaurant, hotel, and attraction reviews that it sorts it by price range and neighborhood. It has helpful maps, and gives great subway and taxi info as well. This book helped us find the perfect hotel for our honeymoon, and I can't wait to use it for restaurant recommendations when we are there.I can't rave enough about how helpful this book is, especially for people who have never been to NYC. I highly recommend it for anyone planning a trip to The Big Apple. I'll be buying these Frommer's EasyGuides for any vacations I take in the future!

Excellent book that has everything from "the best of" based ...
Excellent book that has everything from "the best of" based on different categories such as unforgettable experiences, free activities, ways to see the city like a local, etc to 1-, 2-, and 3-day itineraries, to hotels, restaurants and sights. I utilized the itineraries to start my planning for our trip. They were a great introduction to what you could see in a day without getting too overloaded with activities and having to cut things out. The other section I really used was the "best of section." I forgot about things like getting tickets to attend a TV taping which I signed up for right-away. Pauline's writing is engaging and honest. She truly is an expert on the city.

handy guide
this was a great guide book for me and my husband in our first trip to NYC (well, first for me at least, not for him). It was good size (pocket) and light, and it explained several things, gave some historical context, pointed to the main touristic attractions and gave good tips on how to avoid queues, etc etc. Came with a handy map (but it was not waterproof so beware!) It had suggestions on walking tours to do depending on the number of days you are there. Oh!! if you are going to NYC, I recommend purchasing the tourist 3 day full access to metro tickets, or the 7 day (even if it looks expensive, trust me, it will be cheaper in the end). I dont think it was suggested in the book, but I discovered I could have saved more money if I had done this instead of buying 1 day each time. Also, it will save you the hassle of walking, the distances in NYC are quite large!!

A really useful guide
Absolutely superb. I had been to NY many, many years ago and needed an up-to-date guide. This book talks you through places to visit, listing the pros and cons, plus which days to avoid. It also has a plethora of restaurants, some of which you would never consider going into, but which are full of locals. I really cannot fault it.

Lots of informative practical hints and tips
So informative with really practical advice, The section on how to do New York in 1, 2 or 3 days is fantastic and helped me plan my first trip so that I could see the most I could in the time available without making it too gruelling. Would highly recommend.

Handy book
Informative little book, handy to take with you when your out and about. The tear out map in the back is a bonus, used it everyday for a week long trip. Wished there been some info on vegetarian eating, nothing at all!
