Got a winner.
The Vee Gee soil thermometer gets a high grade in my book. The gauge is well built and more stout than I thought it would be with a very strong and sturdy stem. It has a large dial and large numbers for easy reading (very important in my book), has a large temperature range, stainless steel, pretty responsive and was accurate and needed no calibration (see image). It doesn't bend or flex when pushing into the ground.I use the gauge for soil testing to ensure optimum conditions for seeding lawns and other lawn care uses and I use it to test soil temperatures to ensure my irrigation system is safe from freezing during those late fall season frosts.Note: The description states that the stem is 6", however, the measuring area of the stem is only 5". A none issue for me.I highly recommend this unit for its build, large temperature range, accuracy and readability.

Heavy duty thermometer well suited for taking soil temperatures.
I am splitting hairs but in interest of accuracy I'd characterize this as a general purpose thermometer that is well suited for soil temperature measurement rather than a soil thermometer. If you want to view a "soil temperature thermometer" take a look at the one offered for same price by Territorial Seed Company- one of my favorite seed catalogs. That said, this is an impressive thermometer. Very solidly built at a good price. I compared with typical kitchen meat thermometers of same design and this is far sturdier. There should be no problem using in all but the most dry/hardened soils.I checked the calibration against a high quality at kitchen electronic thermometer at 48F, 65F, 100F. Temperature was one degree different at 48F and exactly the same at the other temperatures. There is what appears to be a calibration adjustment screw on the back of the dial. There is also a 3/4" pipe fitting on the back for screwing thermometer into a fitting. Probe is sturdy which means it has a lot of mass and takes a couple minutes to take an accurate reading- be aware but it is not an issue.

Superb Quality. Commercial grade.
Super quality. I had no expectations that this would be such a high quality thermometer. I am going to buy another one just in case I find a need as it is just a very nice piece. As soon as you see it you realize that it's on another level, but when you hold it it hits 3 levels higher. I thought it would be a cheap piece of crap that I would use until it broke like most everything else you buy these days. Not so. This is a legitimate instrument. This will last as long as I don't break it being foolish no doubt.I don't usually write reviews but I was shocked when I opened this package.

Solid soil thermometer
i am an advanced gardener and have long since given up planting 'by mother's day' or X number of days before/after memorial day....i go by ground temp....i planted tomatoes this year, weeks and weeks after all my friends as they plant by the date and not the ground nor weather. my tomatoes are larger, stronger and producing flowers when my friends are still struggling to keep their healthy. i am a firm believer of using science and tools to help garden. A Soil Temp gauge is one of the first tools i purchased and it has repaid for itself many times over.

and I highly recommend it. To be honest
The soil thermometer is a high quality product, and I was so thankful I purchased it to test the soil temperatures before planting! It certainly saved me from planting too early, and I highly recommend it.To be honest, I thought it might end up being some lightweight cheap thermometer.. I was dead wrong... Very high quality!

good guage from what I can tell
I need a way to calibrate these. I have a bunch of BBQ gauges that I calibrate to boiling water 212F to confirm its accuracy, however these dont go up that high. Used them to guage soil temperatures as to when to put crab grass pre emergent down. So far in have 0 crab grass, well see when June rolls around if I put it down at the right time/temp.Will update when I get a known temperature source that's within this thermometers range. Had thisnoutnin the rain/sun for about a week and no issues.

Works accurately!
I use this thermometer to read air temperature in a duct, not soil temperature. I have checked its accuracy against other thermometers with proven accuracy and it's accurate. Because of its position, it has to be read at a distance of about 4-5 feet and the large dial is one reason it was selected for the job. It is easy to read at this distance. So, it's accurate and easy to read. What more can I say?

Thermometer works through the winter.
I love it. I am growing potatoes in a cold frame and wanted to make sure the soil temperature doesn't drop below 40 degrees. It has worked all winter.

Easy to read
This is a straight up, no bells or whistles probe thermometer which does exactly what it is supposed to do. I use it for measuring soil temperature to time applications of beneficial nematodes. Being an analog instrument, it will never need to have a battery changed. I wish that it had a celsius scale superimposed on the face as well.

Five Stars
Has industrial grade feel to it. Compared it to other temperature gauges in house and appears to be accurate.
