Proven weapon...
The Sterling submachine gun was another of those 20th Century weapons whose utility was proven by its longevity. Developed as a successor to the wartime expedient Sten gun, the Sterling was fielded after the Second World War and remained on active service with the British Army into the 1990's. Author Matthew Moss provides the details in this well-written Osprey Weapon Series book.Roughly a third of the book is devoted to the long gestation of the Sterling, which underwent a series of trials and modifications before finally being accepted in the mid-1950's. The rest of the book is devoted to the Sterling's operational history, and the author cites examples from an impressive variety of conflicts. Of note, the Sterling design was copied by other nations and by various sub-national combatant groups (usually without license). The narrative is backed by an impressive selection of period photographs, diagrams, and modern illustrations. There's plenty here for the gun enthusiast and the historian. Well recommended on the topic.

Richly illustrated and descriptive
This is a fantastic overview of the development, production, and use of the venerable Sterling submachine gun from its birth after World War II to its service with the Imperial Stormtroopers in a galaxy far far away....Matthew Moss does a wonderful job describing how this iconic firearm came to be, and how it spread far beyond its British roots to find service all over the world. Complete with excellent photographs and detailed diagrams, this one volume provides a good overview for casual history buffs, firearms enthusiasts, and military historians - and is far more affordable and available than the collector grade volumes.
