Q: Leather is too thick at the front for a strap lock. Can just screw the nut without washer but will damage the leather. Any suggestions?

I have always laid the washer on the inside of the strap and cut around it to take away the inside leather for the washer to lay in. Doing it that way shows no sign on the front of the strap and the washer fills the leather that you have cut away. I have a number of levy straps, and they are good and thick, but as you say too thick for strap locks. I have fitted Schaller and dunlop like this and if you are neat it does not show at the back.
