Two versions of the product make for problems with some A/V setups.
I bought this instead of getting the Wii component cables so I could get a progressive signal out of my Wii instead of the interlaced signal that you get with the standard cables. It is plugged directly into my Yamaha RX-V675 receiver via HDMI. The idea would be that this would output 1080p like it says on the unit, but it seems to only be giving me a 720p signal. That would be fine, but it doesn't play nice with the up conversion that my receiver does on signals lower than 1080p. During up conversion something happens that leaves the picture from the Wii off center. If I disable upscaling and pass the 720p signal straight through then everything works fine. Unfortunately that means disabling upscaling for all of the sources connected to my receiver since it's an all or nothing type of thing. The picture of the unit also shows a small hole near where it connects to the Wii. According to other reviews, using a paper clip to push the small button inside of this hole will change the signal from 720p to 1080p. Unfortunately, as other reviewers have also mentioned, some units do not have this hole, mine included. That means that there are two versions of this product that exist and you really never know which one your'e going to get. If mine would actually pass 1080p as advertised then this product would get four or five stars, but as it is I'm not really happy about having to adjust my entire home theater setup to work with a product that doesn't fully work as advertised.

Despite one nitpick, this HDMI converter for the Wii comes in handy
I got an Amazon $50 gift card from Belleville East High School as a going-away gift from when I resigned from my student job before moving. When me and my family rented a house and got internet, I went all out and bought two Spyro games, Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, an Xbox Multi-AV cable, and a Wii to HDMI adapter out of curiosity. I heard great things from this converter despite some constructive criticism for certain knock-offs, so I was really careful and bought a brand with a really high rating from reviewers. From what I have seen so far, it does the trick. The picture quality is brighter, crisper, sharper, and more colorful than the third-party component cable for that, the PS2, PS3, and Xbox 360, with crystal clear digital sound quality for good measure. It can also be convenient for if there are plenty of HDMI inputs on a TV and very little AV connections, it is a good substitute. But, if you want me to nitpick, the typical jagginess is marginally more noticeable from increasing the sharpness, but you can get around that with three tips.1. Sit as far away from the TV as the company recommends.2. Connect it to one of those AV receivers that decreases the jagginess, increases the picture quality, and so fourth (in other words, anti-aliasing).3. Decrease the sharpness on the TV.4 (Update). Use a tiny stick of some kind (paper clip, mechanical pencil) to poke through the hidden resolution selection button to set the device to 720p. I just discovered that the imperfections may be a little bit more noticable at 1080p for obvious reasons. The 720p setting also looks a little bit more colorful as well.Other than that, it works like a charm.Update: If played on an Insignia HDTV, you can't change the resolution to 4:3 for Gamecube games which are hardly ever widescreen. As a result, the resolution looks stretched. Please make sure your HDTV can force 4:3 if absolutely necessary, and if it can't, please look into an AV receiver that can.

Works nicely
We have used this for light use for a while now and it is still working fine. The longest I've played any game or had this going is about 4 hours straight and while it was a little warm it wasn't alarming. I just checked after I saw the complaints from some. I'm not sure how it could get after an 8 hour marathon but keep an eye on it at least initially if that is what you need. For the casual occasional user like me the heat hasn't been an issue. The audio does come through the HDMI just fine with no need to attach to the headphone/speaker jack unless you're trying to use this with external speakers. This made it much easier to plug our Wii into our system because the only piece with RCA inputs is my Samsung TV. I couldn't run through my Samsung surround sound system at all so I had to change the input on the TV and then mute the other speakers. That was annoying. I also have 1 other thing that needs RCA inputs so I would have to go behind the TV and swap cables. This makes my life easier and lets me run my Wii through what is now the standard input on today's electronics. I can't believe Nintendo never put one of these out themselves but I'm glad someone finally did.

Resolution is NOT 1080p.
Mine was sold by J-Tech Digital and does NOT display in 1080p! I had a better screen clarity with 480p using the component cable (Red;Blue;Green + right/left audio plugs). I'm not missing anything. There is no switch or button to toggle settings. The white case has no hole in it to stick a paperclip through. In fact you can easily pop the inside components out with some slight pressure and examine the electronics. No switch or button anywhere on the circuit board. I wonder if some people think they are seeing 1080p when it's actually 480p. Maybe other sellers are not selling knock-offs and maybe J-Tech is. Maybe J-Tech doesn't realize what they're selling. I am not one of those lucky people who may have received a functioning 1080p unit. Now J-Tech wants me to pay for return shipping with tracking and upon receipt and examination they will issue a refund. They'll probably resell it and someone else will have to deal with the same frustration.
