Sorghum comes from Africa, where it has been a staple grain crop for a long time. This difficult to find variety of sorghum is exceptionally ornamental, as well as being a useful grain crop. This variety makes a fine dark syrup. When ripe the seed heads have a black and white look because the seeds are snowy white peeking out from a dark covering. They can be cut and dried to use in everlasting arrangements. Even a vase full of the sorghum by itself is attractive. Birds love this seed. In fact, one of the only problems this plant has is that birds are attracted by the white seeds and may start feasting on them. The plants reach 6-8 feet in height (or more) and are an impressive sight in the garden. If you want a real conversation piece in your garden, plant this variety next to tall amaranth. Sorghum is grown very much like corn. The young plants even look very much like corn plants. Chickens love the seed heads also. When you cut the large seed heads for arranging in a vase or use them in country crafts, they last forever!
