Scout Boot CareMens MF Scout Felt Hat Care Kit for Light Colors

I lent out one of my favorite, and very expensive, hats to a friend. It came back with two very prominent mystery stains on it. Just brushing it did not get them out, so I ordered this kit. As you can see from the photos, it almost entirely removed the stains. Not completely, but it salvaged the hat from being trash. It left a bit of a white residue, but not enough to really be noticeable. The color of this hat is called oatmeal, which is a very light tan. So I think anything lighter than this color you would not have the white residue issue. I did have to use a vacuum after brushing, as the instructions indicate, to remove the powder completely. The brush is very gentle and didn’t damage the fibers of a hat. I am going to use the waterproofer to prevent future stains on this and my other hats.

I have a western felt hat in a light beige color that's been worn for at least 10 years without any attempt at cleaning. There was a general accumulation of dirt as well as some greasy spots that somehow got on it, along with some nearly smooth, darker brown areas on the crown where my thumb & forefingers touch when handling the hat. In addition, the very front and back of the brim were quite soft and misshaped. I applied the cleaning spray according to directions and then attempted to brush it off after it turned white. I found the brush that was supplied to be too soft to do a good job of removing the white powder, though it did an excellent job of leaving bristles all over the hat. It shed bristles worse than our cat. The cleaning spray did nothing for heavier spots mentioned above but may have cleaned the rest of the hat a little. It was hard to tell due to the white residue. I eventually used a white wash cloth that was dampened with water to remove the remaining streaks of powder and isopropyl alcohol on the heavier spots. The rubbing alcohol worked quite well, probably removing 95% of the stains, though it took multiple applications. I was surprised at how gray the white cloth became while wiping the hat to remove the cleaning powder. I haven't applied the water repellent spray yet, but expect it will work OK (the only reason I gave it 2 stars). I followed the cleaning with a touchup for the brim using a steam iron set on wool. I ironed both the top and under sides of the soft and misshaped areas of the brim. I was surprised to find that not only did it smooth the brim back into a normal shape but it stiffened the brim as well. My advice would be to skip this kit entirely (except possibly the water repellent spray) and first use a clean hair brush on the hat to get rid of the surface dust and dirt, followed by a good wipedown with a damp, but not wet cloth. After drying, rub the remaining spots with a cloth dampened with alcohol.

The product did come and I have used it. I like the curve brush it does a very good job cleaning my hat. The cleaner worked well I didnt realize it would be so dusty I would have used it in an more open area. Have not used the protector. All in all very good package.

Sprayed down and the brush is useless. Found if I used a vacuum cleaner with the hose nozzle only, it cleaned all the white powder off the hat and left it perfectly clean. sprayed protector on but that will take more time to evaluate.

Did wonders on my tan cowboy Stetson hat, helped with cleaning and stiffness. No change in color.
