My Audi A4 Quattro 2.0 t engine started to make a tapping noise that got worse with time. I had to do some research and tried swapping a few different parts, but it turns out that the high pressure fuel pump follower was worn out, at 130,000 mi. This looks to be exactly the same as the OEM as far as I can tell and it fit right in there. It also reduced the tapping noise almost entirely, I think the PCV valve also needs to be replaced, but that's a slightly different sound. I was worried that my intake camshaft might have been damaged or the lifters, but I don't have to worry about that now that the tapping sound is gone.
