This was an authentic account by not a writer by profession but just a man who wanted to record his time in California and San Francisco during the 1849 period of the mad gold rush where there was little joy, but a lot of adventure, heartache and most of the time failure. I enjoyed it for its honesty getting to know some people of the period.

This is a good read.
I found that the content of this book was quite good. It takes me through the timeline of discovery for the San Francisco Bay area and it makes sense. Many historical journals and books do not keep the timeline in mind when reporting. This one does.
