Chinese Brush Painting: A Hands-On Introduction to the Traditional Art

Very basic and a good companion to her videos. I watched her videos then had the book with step-by-step instructions. I think you could use either alone.

I bought this to help me supplement a lesson on Chinese Brush Art that I was teaching for 5th graders. The book is simple to understand, has good detail for each individual step, and is perfect for this age group. Best of all, it has step-by-step instructions for different paintings, beginning with simple projects and becoming increasingly more complex with each project drawing on previous skills. The kids enjoyed looking through the book and finding ideas to supplement their work. I highly recommend it for older elementary age children; however, I think with patience on the part of the instructor as well as the child, a younger child could benefit from this book, as well.

I bought this book for my 9 year old daughter. She does have better than basic painting skills and she has found this book to be a great reference. It clearly showed how the Chinese brush strokes are to be made. Some of the landscape pictures, such as pine trees and mountains are more advanced and probably not able for a child to do. She does use this book for examples of leaves, flowers, and birds so we consider it a good reference. If you are a self starter and can learn from following a book you would be successful with the instructions in this book.

I am a retiree with no art training who is trying to learn to do Chinese landscape painting. The book provides an introduction to basic brush strokes and Chinese calligraphy, then includes good step-by-step instructions and illustrations for painting orchids, bamboo, and trees, each in several styles. I was able to paint bamboo that satisfied me using only these instructions and several hours of practice. Alas, the book has little on painting rocks, cliffs, and mountains, and the one detailed example of mountains is simplistic and unattractive. All the instructions and illustrations are for using just ink, with no coloring.

I'm a high school Chinese teacher. Students love this CD-ROM illustration. I had students watch it before writing the "Spring Couplets". At first I was a little bit worried if the content would be too childish for high school students, but apparently not. I enjoy it a lot too.
