This is hard to rate because a better understanding of the city is so important and the authors are so genuine in their approach. This collection is an interesting mix of essays, stories, and poems from residents of the neighborhoods of the City of Detroit and a few adjacent areas. In a city where the street you grew up on is a cultural ID card, these essays provide real details, from the layout of city homes to the shopkeepers of past and present. The pieces take on a somber tone, ranging from sad to proud and determined. This is not a guidebook in the sense of tourism — it is a home-grown art piece with a journalistic edge. It provides people familiar with the city a gallery of pieces to explore. For people not familiar with the city, it offers a glimpse into what the city has been, what it has gone through, and the wide range of possible futures. The book has a community tone to it. It’s rough around the edges and doesn’t read like it’s been heavily edited. But that rawness is the point. Interesting collection for anyone hoping to understand the history of the city of Detroit and gain an understanding how that impacts it today.

This is the book about Detroit I've been waiting for years to read. An anthology about the lesser known parts of the city, written by the people who live there—real tales of real lives. A must read for any Detroit-phile like myself!
