Mirror to Damascus: 50th Anniversary Edition

Prophetically Brilliant
Even though it is more than 40 years old, this book evokes Damascus, and the history of Syria, with such detail that it can be seen as a prediction for the troubles of today. And then there is the language; measured, appropriate, beautiful.

Fascinating history
Interesting details from history and geography are wrapped into a vivid account of the author’s personal journey decades ago — before the recent wars.

A master right from the start
I read a hardbound library copy. This is, I believe, Thubron's first travel book, researched and written when he was in his twenties. A precocious writer, he hit the ground running with a whimsical, idiosyncratic style and immense erudition. No trouble keeping my attention all the way through. He has been prolific and in my memory has maintained his performances at a very reliable level.

A potted history of Damascus
I probably made a mistake by reading Thubron's more recent books first of all. A mirror to Damascus was his first book and since it was published his progress as a writer has been immense. His latest book, The Amur River, ( see earlier review), is a masterpiece. The Damascus book is a jumble of historical anecdotes and densely packed details which are often indecipherable. His personal recollections are interesting and one does finish the book knowing a great deal more about Damascus, but any real message is hidden within the density of the script. I was left with no clear idea on why he was writing the book and which aspect of Damascus he wanted to share. Had this been the first of his books that I read, I doubt if I would have bought another. Thank goodness I read them in "reverse order" since otherwise I would have missed several gems.

He loved the book so much that he contacted Colin Thing ...
Bought this for my step dad who lived in Damascus in the 60s and 70s. He loved the book so much that he contacted Colin Thing to praise him in person.
