Excellent book
This is a book in my opinion every religious Muslim preachers should read and perhaps than they can see why the Muslim world is suffering. Bernard Shaw, contribution in this book is outstanding, how the Islamic world one the greatest in human history spiral downwards to a point of ridicule!Muslims who rule do not know how to rule, and that is perhaps their biggest flaws, if the concept of continuity was established within the Muslim states, and respect for human rights as in Islam, the troubles in the Arab and Muslim world would disappear.Islam and the Muslim world suffered under one huge Empire, because when an Empire grows too big so does its arrogance and this was the failure of the Ottomans, which dragged the rest of the Muslim world with them. This is a great book to read if anything to understand as the title suggest "what went wrong"The Crisis of Islam: Holy War and Unholy TerrorMuhammad: A Biography of the ProphetAn Englishman in Riyadh

Good but not perfect
Obviously an expert in his field however it may be beneficial if read some of jarred diamonds books and incorporated climate agriculture natural resources etc into a more compete answer and possibly some of Dawkins work is their e relationship between success and daily time spent on non productive religious activities adherence and thought . Muslims are on the whole more committed to religion than other groups how many people go to church or synagogue on a weekend how many pioneers inventors Nobel laureate s worship God or science . Mr Lewis skirts the question is Islam to blame no probably not but the real question is religion to blame is more pertinent. Europe was ignoring religious doctrine for state/personal benefit from the time of Henry 8th ?.

The root of Arab anger
It may come as a surprise to some but the Arab Empire was at a time at the forefront of civilisation and science when Europe was going throughits Dark Ages. Moreover, cities such as Cairo were once known for their tolerance and sexual permissiveness, a far cry from what the situation is today. The book seeks to explain why a civilisation which reached such heights is today at this sorry state. It does so convincingly.

Islam's Law of War
Islam has reigned more or less supreme since the Arab Muslims invaded and conquered the entire area after their hero Muhammad's death. Jews and Christians have the option to convert to Islam, pay the humiliation tax, Jizya in order to survive, or be killed. Arabs and all other religions must convert to Islam or die. This is how peace in Islam is imposed. This is the fate of the West and all non-Muslim territory, the Land of War that must submit to Islam or die. Allah's holy Law of War,Jihad is in fact the most important religious duty in Islam, obligatory for all Muslims. This is absolutely clear in the Qur'an, the Hadith-traditional stories, the very first valid histories by Ibn Ishaq and Tabari, and Islamic law. Islam must reign supreme over all other religions and laws. Jihad is the pinnacle of Islam. It is indeed a great war for civilization.Qur’an 9:29 Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued. The phrase la ilaha illa allah in the Qur’an: in Mecca 37:35, 38:4-10 and Medina 47:19.In these it means religious war for supremacy against all disbelievers.Qur’an 47:19 Muhammad So know that La ilaha illallah, there is no god except Allah.Maududi says: This was at the time of the battle of Badr. It is also entitled al-Qital, the Fighting, because it gives the firm command for Jihad, and its theme is to prepare the Muslims for war against disbelievers and to give them instructions about those who kill and those who are killed:Qur’an 9: 111 Verily, Allah has purchased of the believers their lives and their properties for (the price) that theirs shall be the Paradise. They fight in Allah's cause, so they kill and are killed.

I don't think that it's an original edition
The media could not be loaded. Pages and content are completely in wrong order, I am going to return it.
