If you search for R40S Pro, you will find a bunch of mixed reviews, everything from junk to great - so with this in mind I lowered my expectations of this handheld.I got this to add joysticks to my retro gaming life, after having an Anbernic handheld for just over a year - joysticks were a needed upgrade.First things first, it looks great. For playability, it is pretty good. There are a lot of reviews saying the controls are mushy, I didn't really find this to be the case, and button presses are compliant and responsive (the same way that controllers were responsive and compliant when I was a kit - we have come a long way in controller tech). The screen is bright, the battery seems pretty good so far, more than enough for my short bursts of retro fun. The shoulder buttons are not great, but this is a flaw of the form-factor more than the build.There are also reports of the device not saving games. This isn't a concern for me, it makes it even more like the old days if your game can't save haha. This may be to do with the SD card though, as the cards that typically come with these handhelds aren't great. I will be replacing mine soon.Which brings me to the customisability. This runs on ArkOS, and these handhelds are a rabbit hole of customisations. From loading screens to themes - you name it. Just be careful to back-up your roms before you start tweaking or you will lose them, like I did.Some reviewers note that the board in some units is the older R36S - I checked behind the battery on mine and can see that it is an R40S Pro, so whatever improvements are there I should have.Overall, a good attempt at retro gaming. Great for showing the kids how it used to be.

It's like a GameBoy Advance in the shape of a GameBoy with some joysticks bolted on. It comes preloaded with a heap of games from various gaming eras. The screen is bright, the menus are simple (though some text is a bit small, but I think that's a fault of the ArkOS designers rather than the seller), there's even cheat search and load tools too.Honestly, if you don't have a Steam Deck and just care about pre-3D gaming, this is a great device. So many games to play and a nice device to play them on!
