Works Well to Sharpen the Blades of a Reel Type Mower
I purchased a used reel type mower to cut one area in my yard I use as a golf practice area. I wanted something that can cut the grass low enough to resemble fairway grass on a golf course. Not that this is important to this review, but just wanted to paint the picture.I watched some YT videos on how to sharpen the blades of a reel mower and one of the methods is to use valve grinding compound. You can also purchase a kit for this purpose that comes with some grinding compound, but it costs about three times as much as this compound and does the same thing. It does come with a handle to use for turning the blades backwards, which is how they are sharpened, but I was able to rig something using tools I have on hand.I have used valve grinding compound back in the day to actually grind valves so I was familiar with how it works...and it worked very well. Having a fair amount allowed me to apply it a few times since it does wear off pretty quickly, unlike when you are grinding valves, as you turn the reel which causes the moving metal blades of the reel to grind against the edge of the stationary blade. Using a variable speed drill in reverse too grind the surfaces it did not take long to see the blades start to get a clean edge showing new metal. I applied more compound a few times to ensure the blade was showing new metal down it's entire length. When I was done I tested the blade by inserting a piece of copy paper as I turned the blade to verify it was sharp along the entire length of the cutting surface - which it was. The entire process took me about 10 minutes and the results are just what I wanted. The mower cuts the grass a lot easier and cleaner now which helps it to grow better and have a very even height. For some reason I received two tubes of the compound so it was an excellent value for me. Although I now have more valve grinding compound than I could ever use in my lifetime. In the end it did the job well and since I have used Permatex valve grinding compound to actually grind valves, I can also say it should still work well for its intended purpose.
