absolutely wonderful!
i have chris pye's first edition of this book, which is older, and three-hundred fifty some pages. this new revised edition is split into two volumes. both are so good that i bought both editions-the original single volume edition and the revised two-volume edition. i have his other books. he is brilliant and handles the english language as well as he handles wood and tools. new edition has color pics, both editions are absolutely amazing. buy anything he writes; you'll be happy

Required Reference Book
This is an oustanding reference. It answers questions raised by beginners and experienced carvers, alike. Especially helpful is the section on sharpening. Not only does Chris explain, in detail, how various carving tools should be sharpened, but also explains why. After I read my copy, I ordered both volumes for our carving club library. Once members have seen this one, I'm sure they'll want to purchase a copy for their own.

Another winner!
I ordered this book with Chris Pye's 'Relief Carving/Practical Intro with this book. So much info it has taken me a few readings, but am so grateful for the careful detail he provides! Only regret... didn't know there is a Volume 2, which I will be ordering soon.

A must for carvers
This book should be a part of every carver's tool box. Understanding the history of your tools, how to sharpen them, and proper care creates a deeper appreciation and higher value for your tools. I really enjoyed the history that was taught about this hobby I enjoy.

A good all around reference tool.
Great practical information for the beginning wood carver. A good reference book to keep handy in the workshop for information on choosing and sharpening tools. A good all around reference tool.

Excellent book from master craftsman
I agree with the first reviewer of this book: if you feel like starting carving, read this first. It's very easy to read, with good up to date pictures and illustrations. It will help you understand tools, good practice, and the like. Chris Pye is clearly a master at what he does; he balances his enthusiasm with the pragmatism gained from having taught (and made a living from) carving over many years. I've bought this before shelling out on tools and equipment. The only criticism I would make is that this book should not have been split into two volumes, it would have been better as a single logical reference text. These books don't cover how to carve. You'll have to buy, e.g. Chris Pye's Lettercarving book. Given this, it feels like the Guild of Master Craftsmen are milking this a bit.I also had a rye smile when Chris talked about boxed sets of tools being questionable. He now endorses a full range of tools, etc., including....boxed sets of chisels! All in all, excellent books.
