Well made, but do you need it?
This is a really well made and sturdy kitchen tool. I can't believe you would have to replace it in your lifetime. On the con side, it is heavy and fairly expensive. I also question if I want to pull it out, when I have a spoon in my hand that works almost as well. Just one more thing to clean up. This said, if you are a professional chef or a home cook that uses the chinoise a lot, it may be a good purchase even at this price

Works At the Bottom of a Chinoise Strainer
Wooden pestles have long been a favorite of mine. They are iconic links to culinary tradition. They are pleasantly tactil to the hand, if oiled or waxed. They are kinder to metal mesh in a chinois. I use this with a Matfer Chinoise strainer because its profile is just right to work down to the very bottom of the cone on that item. I have another favorite combination of a rounder pounder and a rounder-bottomed, coarser sieve. A perfectly fine alternative is the food mill, if you do not need to remove relatively fine particles from a stock.

Was happen to find this for my Grandma's old strainer. However it was a bit long, but after cutting it down a bit, sanding it nicely, and applying mineral oil, looked brand new, and worked perfectly for my dear wife.
