An intriguing read
Get on this roller coaster and ride into a James Bond adventure. This is a well-written and well-researched story of James Bones entrance into the Double 0 Section and his first and second assignments as 007.

Pretty decent James Bond origin story
This books spells out the 007 origin with allusions to the "shaken and not stirred" and other tropes of the Bond novels. What I appreciated most was the author's mimicry of Fleming's writing style and the appropriate setting - the late 50's. After all, Fleming set "Casino Royale," the first Bond novel, in that era.All said, it's not the greatest book in the world, but it's pretty good and worth thr read.

A Truly Great Bond Novel!
As soon as I heard this was available, I ordered my copy from Amazon UK. I had no intention of waiting for the New York publishing industry to wake up. The book won’t be released here in the US until November. Amazon shipping has eliminated the need for involvement by US publishers for titles by British authors. The book arrived within a week and I read it nearly on the spot. Horowitz previously published Trigger Mortis, his first James Bond novel, and I loved that, and I loved his Sherlock Holmes novel, The House of Silk. That’s right, for those of you unfamiliar with this author, Anthony Horowitz has written a modern classic Sherlock Holmes novel and a James Bond novel. And now he turns in another James Bond novel that is among the best of all Bond tales. Forever and a Day is the equal of any James Bond novel by any author, including Ian Fleming, Bond’s creator. This is a great book. However, if you’re not already a fan of Ian Fleming’s Bond novels, then skip it. This is the true literary James Bond, and not the film character. Once again using unpublished material by Ian Fleming, Forever and a Day is a well-crafted, tight thriller. A prequel to Casino Royale, the first Bond novel, we learn how Bond acquired his 007 designation. No spoilers here, but the various ingredients, including the title’s importance, an over-the-top villain named Scipio, an alluring femme fatale named Sixtine, all move toward the inexorable and brutal conclusion. There have been many, many Bond novels by various authors since Fleming’s death, especially by John Gardner and Raymond Benson, and while I have enjoyed them, Anthony Horowitz has turned in a game changer with Trigger Mortis and Forever and a Day. There is consistency here, and above all else an abiding respect and understanding of the character. My fingers are crossed that Horowitz will write another one.

Beta Bond
I have to admit that I am a fan of the movie Bonds. I think of the books From Russia with love is the best, movie too. But, most of the Fleming novels are prohibitively expensive now for 120 page books. So i decided to go with one of the pastiche authors. The book received high ratings, and who doesn't like an origin story. But, unfortunately the author didn't quite capture the essence of Bond. Even as a newly minted OO on his first mission there was too much questioning, doubt, and reliance on the female protagonist to get him out of trouble. He second guessed himself way more than a seasoned field operative, who was also a veteran of SBS/SOE operations just five years earlier. I highly doubt he would have the qualms he showed about the use of violence, or have the 21st century outlooks on Great Power politics that he diatribed over in this volume. It was not James Bond, but more Jake Bond; a college literature professor's idea of what Bond would be like if he was a New England academic. Not a bad plot, as a first mission story, but it was no American Assassin.

Lovely, tense
A well sculpted look into early Bond, full of emotional chips and baggage. Loved it.

The Best James Bond Novel in over 50 years.
The title of this review really says it all.Ian Flemings last full James Bond novel was The Man with the golden gun - and in my opinion - this might just be the best Bond novelwritten since then.In many ways,in fact , it may be even better than that particular book. But since that was written by Fleming himself,of course, no other writers Bond books can ever be ranked ahead of his originals lolBut boy - this one’s close. We really shouldn’t be surprised when we think about it,though.Anthony Horowitz is the best selling author of the YA series of Alex Rider novels, which is itself probably the best Bond style series ever written outside of Fleming and a set of books every James Bond fan would feel right at home with,.So it made sense that when he took on 007 himself he would be able to deliver the goods. He uses a very different style on his Bond novels than he does in any of his other books, though. He actually writes in the style of Ian Fleming himself here - adding some brand new twists and some of the very modern thrills and chillsthat todays audiences expect from a modern day thriller.Besides the well written and exciting action sequences, he also manages to come up with one of the greatest Bond ladies of all time and two tremendous very memorable Villains. And despite it being a James Bond novel that is a prequel to what comes after, some of the situations he puts Bond in really does make the reader feel a sense of dread and terror for what may actually happen to him!And to wonder how the hell he makes it out well enough to star in the rest of the series! The fact that Horowitz can pull off such genuine excitement in this way is really a tribute to the quality of writer he is.The James Bond series is very fortunate to be in the hands of such a master of his craft. And we readers are also very lucky to be along for the ride!Hopefully we’ve got more to come!

Top notch, highly enjoyable Bond novel
Anthony Horowitz has managed to write a Bond novel that's simply delightful to go through - I might have even liked some of its elements more than some of from Fleming's corpus itself. The atmosphere is, however, not so immersive and stylish as the one we get on the originals. Finally, the fact that this is supposed to be a prequel to Casino Royale had me doubting whether the character we get would be something other than the actual Bond himself. However, this concern turned out to be quite unfounded given that Bond seems to be more or less his own self throughout.

James Bond at his best!
Excellent book - so nice to read of James Bond back in the 1950's - you can just picture Sean Connery as you read the book.
