really happy because I have them finally after a long time ...
So, I just got my chisels today... really happy because I have them finally after a long time of wanting to start my wood carving back up and get better at it. but, disappointed at the edges and one of the handles was split.... having done wood carving for some time now, I just went ahead and taped up the split handle. the edges are not very sharp and have a very shallow grade.... which is also fine. But, what that means is I have to spend the time to sharpen and shape them.... as if these did not come from a company that knows much about wood carving... So far as I can tell there are four of the chisels that had air pockets in the metal because there were pits in them deep enough to really cause a problem when cutting through wood... again. I will have to really grind them down to get them where I need them to be to even use them... Outside of those things. I think this is a set I can work with.... any good craftsman knows you will have to put some time into your tools as well as what you are working on... I just didn't expect to have to put so much work in right off the bat before I could even use them... maybe hence the pricing for this item... hope you find this review helpful and insightful. have a very good day!!!

Great Deal if you learn to how to Sharpen
Good Carving tools, handles are nice, metal blades seem secure in the handles. Excellent assortment of tools. The only problem is the blades are honed poorly. It takes a 400 grit stone to get them back in shape. 1000 grit stone will take hours. However I feel it is good to develop your honing skills on a cheaper set than to mess up a top of the line set sharpening. I have sharpened a few of them to razor sharpness and they do keep there edges well.Highly recommend for the beginner. You will have a basic set while collecting the top of the line carving tools. If you are not interested in learning to sharpen your tools pass these up. However you will need to learn to sharpen the tools. Many online sites teach sharpening,The five starts means you get a lot of tools for your money. They certainly are not "top of the line" but when sharpened you could have a good set . Considering the great tools cost upward at 35 dollars a tool.

I have a large background in woodworking but never carving so I decided this would be a good introductory option
I bought this set as a way to get started in some introductory carving. I have a large background in woodworking but never carving so I decided this would be a good introductory option. Package came fast with everything in it but on first attempt straight out of the packaging none of the edge were honed or sharp. Not to mention the un-evenness of the cutting points. I spent HOURS using my whetstones to hone everything and finally when I feel content with the edge, I go to start practicing and they CAN NOT hold and edge to the them. after 5 min with the straight chisel, I had to go hone it again. The type of wood I was using was a scrap piece of mahogany from a previous project. I am fairly disappointed with the turnout as the sharpest edge from the kit was on the grinding stone they included. The gouges I'm fairly certain they would not have worked on balsa wood they were so flat and took forever to sharpen. I suggest you look at a different kit unless you have the equipment/tool & time to spend making these worthwhile for a couple minutes of use.

Pleasently surprised
This product is more than I expected, for the price I thought I was going to get a complete junk but I was pleasently to find the gouges are pretty OK with the first glance you can see some of the machining flaws and are not near as sharp as they need to be but just throw an edge on it and they will perform decently. The stones are garbage I snapped the two little ones between thumb and forefinger. and the large stone already has deep groves running into it.

Good beginner set
This set would of gotten 5 stars from me if the set would have been sharpened. I was so excited and ready to start my new adventure to wood carving! Until I found out they needed to be sharpen first. Which shouldn't be a big deal but I have no idea how to sharpen them. So I had to wait for my dads help to show me how to sharpen them. They also dull pretty fast but you can't beat the price.

Great Tools for the Price!
As long as you don't mind sharpening these yourself, I don't think you can beat the price for the variety of tools. They are solid and well made, but all came with relatively poorly ground edges; several gauges required a total reshaping because the angle was totally wrong. Once sharp, they seem to hold their edge well though and overall I am very pleased with this purchase.

Goldilocks here...
Once I sharpen them they will be great for large-scale carving. I'd love a recommendation for a moderately-priced set for small-scale tools for carving wood block prints and intricate friezes. The X-Actors set isn't sturdy and, therefore, safe enough to use on wood as firm as clear white pine. I'm not even going to try yellow pine or fruit wood until I get a better set.

Poor quality
They were as advertised. But the quality leaves quite a bit to be desired. The shanks are only 1/8 (I think... very thin). They are not as nearly as large as they appear to be in the picture; They are small and a little hard to get a good grip on. The shafts don't run the entire length of the wood handle. So I'm not real confident on how much or how long it will withstand continual pounding from a mallet. The wood handles seem to be some type of pine... very lightweight. The MOST disappointing aspect is that the cutting edges are not even straight. I will have to spend a SIGNIFICANT amount of time sharpening, honing and polishing them. IF ... IF I decide to even keep them. I realize they were less than $30, but you at least expect them to have a proper edge on them. Right??!!
