This book is for children (and adults) who love to read
This book is for children (and adults) who love to read. The illustrations are minimal but what exists in the book is beautiful. It's a paperback as said in description. This makes a great gift.

Naomi Lewis's retellings are always marvellous.
Naomi Lewis was an Andersen expert and her retellings are exquisite. That said, this is a beautifully printed edition and quite special, but you might want to look carefully at the illustrations and ask yourself if you are ready for this quite idiosyncratic view of the familiar tales. Sometimes illustrations of Andersen's tales seem too sweet to me and some convey a worrying sense of romanticised girlish victims. I'm not a particularly ideologising critic, hope not anyway. I love the Snow Queen retold by Naomi Lewis and illustrated by Angela Barrett. These illustrations are not like that. My response was rather perplexed and certainly not emotionally coloured in any way. What I felt was oddness and distance, rather than involvement. Take a look and see what you think yourself.

Beautiful illustrations and translation
Unputdownable. You will keep going back to it. As an adult I love its wonderful art work and its excellent translation - lovely language. It has also inspired a 7 year old who has ADHD who was captivated by the illustrations, and a highly intelligent 11 year old who is topping his class in everything and is a superb artist/writer too. So it really is a wonderful book that I don't think you can go wrong with.

Tales of Hans Christian Andersen
A delightful and enchanting book. This is my children's introduction to the world of Han's Christian Andersen. They aboslutely love these classic tales and the gorgeous illustrations really enhance the book.
