Beginner's best friend - clear comprehensive overview and easy to folllow with great results.Have just attended my first chinese painting class conducted in chinese.Understanding 50% of what is said - probably missing out the most important half, this book fills in the gaps admirably.Came home and rummaged through the library and found this volume which I had bought last year and shelved.Concepts covered today are clearly set out.There are many books out there - but this one is worth a look. I'm glad I did.

Other reviewers have accurately described this book and its value. The artwork demonstrated is wonderful, the instructions clear and the variety of applications of the art of brush paintings are inspiring. A good book to add to ones library, if not an in depth view of the philosophy and attitude behind this simple but elusive skill.

This basic instruction book provides a good platform to work from. Combined with Henry Li 's Blue Heron Art on you tube the two offer great portals into the tradition and possibilities of Chinese brush painting.

I am a novice artist and found this book very helpful, and the pictures are beautiful. The author does a great job of explaining the techniques and strokes used to paint the various pictures in the book. The pictures alone made the book worth adding to my art book collection.

This book was great. It gave alot of information and instructions on Chinese painting showed strokes and gave good back ground.

I am interested in attempting Chinese brush painting and purchased a couple of books to use for reference. This is a very good book to use for that!

Both the beginner and the improver will benefit from this delightful introduction to painting in the Chinese style. There is a logical progression from an understanding of the need to prepare ones spiritual link to the subjects of the painting to the actual practicalities of doing the painting. The projects in the book are explained step by step with relevant and clear illustrations of the artwork as it progresses as well as photographs of the artist's hands and how to hold the brushes. The history of Chinese painting is brief but comprehensive covering early to modern day styles. The "four perfections"-the image, poetry, calligraphy and signature are all covered with clear examples. Even the mounting process is covered. This is an absolute gem at all levels. A pleasure to read even if you are not interested in doing the painting as it gives you an insight into looking at Chinese art in an informed way. Thank you Que Lei Lei.

Book arrived very quickly in mint condition. I couldn't be more pleased especially as it was very cheap.
