Tears For Fears with Oleta Adams
To put it quite simply, if you're a fan of Tears For Fears this dvd is a must. It contains the original "Scenes From The Big Chair" tour film, first released on VHS in 1985/6. That in itself is a very good excuse to purchase. As added incentive, you also have the amazing "Going To California" concert filmed at the Santa Barbara County Bowl. Unlike "Scenes From The Big Chair", this is a complete show which also features the amazing piano and vocal talents of Oleta Adams. She was featured very prominently on their third album " The Seeds Of Love " and having her share the stage with TFF is a revelation. Not only does she sing the tracks from The Seeds of Love on which she contributed, she also lends a hand with other TFF classics and gets to have her own moment in the spotlight. As I said at the start of this review, if you're a TFF fan and you don't own a copy of this dvd, it's a must have."You Better Love Lovin' And You Better Behave..."Also recommended Oleta's music cd's..There is " The Very Best Of Oleta Adams " available but the stand-out album in her catalogue for me is her Roland Orzabal produced debut " Circle Of One ".

Great Memories, great band
OMG. if you are a fan of these boys you will love this. I am rediscovering this band and my roaring twenties memories came flooding back! this dvd is a must if you like their music of course, but I love the interviews with the affable Curt and the humour of Roland. there is some behind the scenes footage , live performances and videos. the best bit for me was the making of the "Head over heels" video in Torronto Library. I have fallen totally in love with them again.also with the DVD is a live concert from California around 1990. I have never seen these boys live but now i SO want to!

The Big Chair Goes to California
This DVD is, in effect, two films: a seventy-five minute documentary from c.1985, and a ninety-minute concert from 1990. In addition, there is a useful thirty-five minute interview in 2005 with music producer Chris Hughes, who analyses the work he did for the group almost on a track-by-track basis and also describes how the nature of albums from vinyl to CD has changed the contours of track-listing.First, the documentary, titled `Scenes from the Big Chair'. This features interviews, concert material, extracts from videos, and general behind-the-scenes footage. Orzabal and Smith, along with Ian Stanley and Manny Elias, explain the origins of the band and the meanings of some of its early songs. Orzabal especially comes over as a reticent, thoughtful and measured man but with a playful sense of humour. He (and Chris Hughes in his separate interview) put paid to what I had believed from reading elsewhere that the group had concentrated on the `money hits' on the `Songs from the Big Chair' album at the expense of the rest of the set.The concert film from 1990 is entitled `Going to California'. It has annoying quick-fire editing that mixes colour shots with monochrome. It also experiments with a number of distorting filters. Nevertheless, everyone on stage is in fine form. There are the usual renditions of hit material but also inflected with rock, soul, jazz, and blues.Overall, then, this DVD comprises a fair amount of material on one of the biggest and best groups from the 1980s, and who are still producing some fine work today.

A chi ama i Tears for Fears

An interesting journey into one of the biggest rock albums ever made...
One thing I cannot stand is when people classify Tears For Fears as an 80's band! The duo consisting of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith are not limited to only an 80's sound. The fact Tears For Fears released more music after the 1980's seems to be ignored largely due to the success of the album portrayed in this documentary. Songs From The Big Chair was an amazing record that gave the duo the stature of becoming one of the biggest bands in the world. Taking a drastic change in the style of their music compared to their earlier album "The Hurting" Tears For Fears became very commercial and it worked. A facinating look into the making of this record with interviews from the duo themselves and the backing tour members with some fun extra's. The additional interview with Chris Hughes recorded for this DVD is a real gem and a MUST listen to for any fan! He talks about trying to convince Roland Orzabal (The brains behind the duo) to add "Shout" and "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" to the record as they were sure to be smash hits! Well he was right and these two songs made Tears For Fears a household name. Included is some great tour footage from their exhausting tour in 1985 and 1986 promoting the record around the world. Next comes a full length concert from a show recorded in Santa Barbara, California in 1990 which once again shows how the duo dramatically changed their sound for their next record "The Seeds Of Love". This show is a stand out show and shows how tight the band are, as well as how talented Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith really are. This concert is a drastic change from their previous tour for "The Big Chair" but was also the beginning of the end of Tears For Fears as people knew them. Roland and Curt were not even speaking to each other on this tour as their friendship and professional relationship began to dissipate quickly. The recording of the record for which this tour was promoting found Curt Smith being pushed out nearly entirely of all the recording as frontman Roland Orzabal took charge and took over nearly all of the vocals and instruments as well. Curt was reduced to playing bass on two tracks, singing one song and singing backing on one song. After this tour he and Roland spilt as Roland continued on as Tears For Fears. In 2003 Roland and Curt reformed and recorded one of Tears For Fears best records "Everybody Loves A Happy Ending" as this album was truely a partnership of the duo. Even still though Roland continued to dominate the vocals as he has become know as the "Voice Of Tears For Fears". This DVD is worth every nickel as it transports you to a time when pop music was at it's best...The 1980's!
