Snow White & The Huntsman 2 Disc DVD Exclusive Edition

Visually beautiful, shame about the acting
This film really is worth a look even if only for the aesthetic aspect of it. We all know the story of Snow White, yet this re-telling has Snow as more 'warrior princess' than 'damsel in distress'. It is a role which requires versatility and emotion, both of which Kristen Stewart lacks. Her wooden acting makes Snow White hard to root for, I felt no emotional connection to the character or her plight. Charlize Theron, however, as the wicked Queen is magnificent. Over-acted, some might say, but in my opinion she plays the beauty and youth-obsessed queen perfectly. The white bath scene in particular is one of the film's most memorable scenes. The Huntsman (Hemsworth) is a typical anti-hero, and the part was played very well despite zero chemistry with Stewart. The plot is fairly basic, Snow needs to get from A to B with the help of the reluctant Huntsman. They are chased by the Queen's brother - a genuinely creepy character - and his men who need to get her back to the queen. A prince is added to the bunch in an entirely unnecessary sub-plot as he ALSO has no chemistry with Stewart. The dwarves are hilarious, and the places they visit are both atmospheric and visual masterpieces.I really did enjoy this film, but the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is Kristen Stewart. Her awkward acting and lack of emotional depth made her character frustrating. And whoever cast her as 'the fairest in the land' when she has to go up against the stunning Charlize Theron needs a serious reality check. And, thanks to her 'indiscretion', the rushed and 'let's leave it for the sequel' ending is a let down as this will most likely be a stand-alone film.

Great cast wasted by a shoddy, plodding script and a bland title character.
If modern Disney has taught me anything it's that I should be rooting for the bad guys now.Their tragic pasts and eventual final sacrifice is more than enough to offset any and all evils committed in their reign of terror.Alas this is the one movie I can not support such an action in. Anyone who utterly dominates every fight like that then decides to throw the game before final victory, not to mention limply dropping the knife at the enemies throat (instead of finishing the stab when you have 10 time the strength of the plank of wood character/actress you are up against) deserves no reconciliation. If you are going to go out, at least take the biggest hinderance to the movie out with you.So that's the main (and most talented) character/actress out of the running. Alas evil queen, you never got a fair shake at ultimate power, pretty sure the entire "nature decides to switch itself off" thing wasn't entirely your fault.Snow white was an impressively athletic type considering she had been locked in a tower room for 10-15 years. riding, swimming, sword-fighting (trained?) soldiers and being so innately loved by spirits they they never bothered to notice her utter lack of personality. The huntsman was standard hollywood movie tag-along, utter waste of an otherwise talented actor.Creepy brother needs to learn how to side-step a bull-rush, well played tho.Random robin-hood archetype was certainly in this movie. The Dwarves were a cast of many a known face, a shame they never got to do much with it beyond smack hemsworth in the gut with a pick-handle and be occasionally punted but only when it wasn't inconvenient to the plot. That's about it, I was clock watching more than movie watching on this one.Main thought that comes to mind is that if you are only going to have 2 trebuchet (lobbing explosive payloads) as defensive items maybe test them before hand so they land in the middle of the only castle approach instead of one into the water-line and the other into the rocky outcrop lining the beach. Also if your suddenly valuable prisoner escapes via an open hatch, maybe block part of it up next time instead of leaving a man-sized hole in your defenses right next to the gate-house.

Neither script nor lead actress could carry this for 2 hours
Having watched the sequel first because it was free at the time and this wasn't - I am disappointed with this movie in terms of coherent storytelling and general script. I might have rated it higher if I didn't have Winter's War to compare it to.Kristen Stewart just didn't work as Snow White. I will admit that was at least in part due to the character being badly written with a poor character progression but Stewart just doesn't have the presence to give a rousing speech in plate armour especially after spending most of the film as a 'pure and innocent' hippy type.Loved the dwarves, the queen, the huntsman, and most of the cgi effects (reforming out of a puddle of eviscerated ravens... yuck but awesome! Dark forest hallucinations... ditto!)Sadly neither Stewart nor the script writers were up to making this a 2 hour movie. It was okay... but that is not the bar you set for a movie with Theron and Hemsworth.
