Does the trick
Have not tested at 4K, but for standard 1080 video this does just fine. The optical audio out was what I needed, to get the 5.1 signal from my Roku to my Blu-Ray player (which is also my sound system), since the TV is old and would not pass it through HDMI. It was dead easy to set up -- though, do note you'll need a USB power adapter or else a USB port on your power strip -- and has given no trouble at all.

Works but one minor issue
Works as intended only thing with my adapter was that the USB cable provided wasn't working well and caused video/audo to turn on and off. After replacing the provided USB cable with one of my own I was ableto have a stable video/audio connection.

Cuts out sound with annoying interference
Tried it on all three settings and after a minute or so sound would change to irritating beeping noises cutting out the tv sound. Returned it for similar product sold by different company which does what it was supposed to

Works, but sound quality degrades slightly
Sound quality isn't as good as directly plugging the speaker into the laptop (sound coming out of this HDMI-audio splitter sounds a little tinny and trebly), but still sounds much better than plugging the speaker directly into the monitor.

it didn't work
I bought it for my Xbox one s, because my monitor has no voice, I have to use a speaker, but this product can't separate voice from HDMI, so I returned.

Worked perfect
Woo it worked, I had a pretty intersting set up. So I needed to this for the car. I set up a Blu-ray player and set up a 3.5mm blutooth adapter for headphone for the kids in the back. It worked perfectly and made a long drive just that much more bearable.

ONLY PINK
Hooked up, used two different known good cables, no image. Ok Use the cable to hookup the USB power that is given IF needed. Got an image all right, the image I would have normally seen BUT WITH A BRIGHT PINK HUE, didn't matter what cable used bright pink. Waste of $20.
