Absolute Batman: The Long Halloween

Bruce Wayne would say "I believe in 'Absolute' "..
I've never read The Long Halloween before. I've only just finished the second chapter and i must say that, without knowing how the story ends, i am so glad that my first experience of Long Halloween is an 'Absolute' one. What an awesome piece of craftsmanship. The paper used is the thickest paper stock I've ever had the pleasure of leafing through. The artwork is fantastic. Each page has a strong weight to it; I had to keep double checking the page numbers in case I'd picked up two pages by mistake. The solid box slip case is brilliant. The pages are sewn to the hard-back and there is a ribbon within to keep your place in the book.If your looking at buying this book, you must have already done your research and have a good inkling that the story is up there with the best of them. So, you already know you want the story but you may be undecided about the format. I know it's pretty costly, and not everyone has unlimited disposable income (me included), but, my honest advice to you would be; if you can afford to buy it - you can't afford not to!Just treat yourself; add this to your collection. It's a piece of art you can actually enjoy and it will increase in value; both sentimental and monetary.

Absolutely First Class
This is the absolute edition of the series of Batman comics, that inspired the Christopher Nolan version of Batman, which we now see on our cinema secreens and DVDs. The artwork is superb and the story inspired and multi layered. The test of a good picture or story is that you constantly discover new aspects to it. Batman is essentailly a dark conflicted character who inhabits a nightmarish world, and this book will reveal that world in all its glory.

Great book with a brilliant story
After buying the Absolute Sandman set of 5 books plus Absolute Death, and what a great set they are too, I decided to get Absolute Batman - Long Halloween to check it out. It is £40+ new but you can find it cheaper used on eBay. It's a large book complete with slipcase, the pages are thick and of high quality, the artwork is somber and yet stunning and the story line is a mystery that keeps you guessing to the end. All in all a great introduction to Batman and if you are a Batman fan, I would recommend it for your collection. However it doesn't take long to read - I finished it in a couple of days so am looking for my next Absolute Batman.

Awesome slipcased oversized ABSOLUTE, Top 5 all time Batman story
I can honestly say this Absolute is the most prestigious looking book (slipcase) in my bookcase (and i have A LOT of Omnibuses and the like). The book is large, luxurious and the pages are the thickest i have ever handled. Long Halloween is easily considered to be one of the Top 5 batman stories of all time and there have been hundreds of Batman stories over the last 75 years ! Nolan used parts of Long Halloween as inspiration for the first of his Batman films, Batman begins - no Ra's but plenty of other good Gotham loveliness (sorry if that qualifies as a 'plot spoiler').Frankly if you're a fan and can afford the book, buy a copy, it will be one of your most prized possessions !

An absolute must for anyone interested in Batman.
I had heard a lot of good things about The Long Halloween before I made the purchase but it still turned out to be even better than I expected. The murder mystery plot is thoroughly engaging but the best part about TLH is the character development - with Two-Face's origin being the driving force behind the entire story. It is also cool to see how much influence this book had on the latest two movies - with a couple of scenes having been transposed to film almost identically. At first, I was a bit thrown by Tim Sale's artwork as it's quite abstract. However, it did not take long to grow on me. Sale perfectly captures the dank cesspool that is Gotham City. In some full and double page frames I often spent minutes exploring all the tiny little details. This is the second of two "Absolute" editions that I have bought (the first being All-Star Superman) and it is well worth it. The Long Halloween is an epic (around 400 pages long) and lends itself excellently to the large format of the Absolute edition. This is essential reading to anyone who claims to be a fan of Batman or anyone who wants to learn more about Gotham's Dark Knight.

Bought it for ₹4500. The quality of the book dosn't match the price. Its printed and bound in china. I recived a new sealed product, i opened the book and the pages are coming out and the spine is broken. Then i replaced 3 times, and every time i received defective product regurding the binding.

Best Batman Hardcover
I'll start off by saying that I am a huge fan of Batman and have read just about every decent Batman graphic novel and certainly all of the best. I've read Batman: Year One, Dark Knight Returns, Arkham Asylum, The Killing Joke, Hush, you name it. I've seen every Batman film, and television episode and have owned several Batman related products ranging from clothes to toys to mugs to DVDs. I know my Batman and when he's good or not, so if I say I'm a Batman fan you will believe me. The Long Halloween may be the most densely built story that Batman has ever been featured in. Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale have made the best Batman graphic novel since Dark Knight Returns and I think in many regards it's better. Unlike Dark Knight Returns, this story encompasses every aspect of Batman and his supporting characters. We get to see Batman deal with every kind of situation that he would deal with in one book. Something that sets this story apart from most Batman graphic novels is that it is, in the end; a mystery. After to put aside all the action and drama, you're still left with the characters trying to solve a mystery. Although they never address it, this seems to be set in what may be considered 'Year Two' of Batman's career or maybe 'Year Three', so it's in between the times when Batman's getting started in Gotham City and when he's become jaded and fully experienced. Dick Grayson is introduced in the book's sequel, so it's definitely a younger Bruce Wayne, Christian Bale's Batman, it's Captain Gordon not commissioner, and Harvey Dent is the District Attorney. We begin with the wedding of the nephew of Carmine 'The Roman' Falcone, afterward Batman enters the Roman's penthouse apartment to get to his safe, only to find Catwoman there already. The Roman's men enter and a bounty is put on both of their heads. The entire first chapter really just deals with the Roman and his organization, we see him scaring the bank chairman into keeping Falcone's money out of the bank. We see Batman burn down a stockpile of Falcone's cash (a breathtaking image that was used in Nolan's Dark Knight only Joker burnt the cash and for completely different reasons) and we see the alliance between Batman, Gordon and Dent forged to bring down the Roman. The first chapter ends with the Roman's nephew killed and a .22 gun is left at the scene and a jack o'lantern to commemorate Halloween. And that's the story; a serial killer starts killing people connected to Falcone's syndicate on major holidays. And the structure of the book is what's so cool. Each issue we see Batman trying to find the identity of this Holiday killer while at the same time he has to deal with each member of his Rogue's gallery. Everyone aside from Croc, Black Mask, Mr. Freeze, Ra's Al Ghul and Harley Quinn are in this book. The best face-off in the story of course is Batman VS Joker on New Year's, on a plane over the city. To go into further detail would spoil the story, but by the end, Batman is changed into a different person as are each character. If the story's not your cup of tea, then the art certainly will be. Tim sale is a master of his craft, among the best 2 artists in the medium I'd say (the other being Alex Ross). The wonderful thing about the art is that while being centered in reality, it's very abstract at the same time. Batman looks right, but no human is that muscular. Joker looks perfect, but by scale his teeth would be 6 inches long. And no matter how weird the art may seem it's always Batman in the end. In the end you're left with a classic Batman story with perhaps the best art, and a smorgasbord of Batman villains and a very powerful villain origin and a genuine shock when Holiday is revealed. The Absolute Edition is the best buy I've made when it comes to Comic books, unlike say Watchmen, we get input from both the artist and the writer. A nice interview and a cover commentary is very insightful, and the usual galleries and sketches are great. But the feature book is what it's all about. Any Batman fan who doesn't own this book, needs to rush out and buy it!
