Takes a While but Numbers Much Reduced
Having never had a problem with fungus gnats before I assumed that my living room was being inundated with fruit flies. On closer inspection, after lifting the plastic pots from out of their ceramic pot bases, I could see them running around the sides and all over the top of the compost.I used the killer powder as instructed. I took the pots outside to apply the powder as it puffs out, and the contents were sufficient to cover four pots with a thick layer. I am now watering the plants from the bases as recommended, to keep the surface dry, as the gnats thrive in moist conditions. It seems to be working. There are no flies running over the compost now or around the pots. There are still some in the leaves and they're still gathering on my windows, but I'm feeling confident that they're not going to be able to breed with this stuff on the pots so over time, they're going to die off.I was happy to use this as it's a natural chemical free product. It looks a bit strange, like sand on my houseplants, but this is hardly an issue compared to the annoyance of having tiny flies in my living room. Hopefully, this will keep the populations down and eventually just kill them off completely.

OK if only a small application required
Bought to suppress fungus gnats on my indoor plants - good quantity if you only have a couple of plants but I had more so subsequently bought a greater quantity from different supplier, which worked out much cheaper.

The number of fungus gnats is reducing
Unfortunately all my plants in my bathroom have become riddled with fungus gnats so I thought I would give this a try through Vine's free for a review system.Thankfully most of my plants are in quite small pots as the instructions say to use a 1 -2 cm layer of the powder on top of the soil. This along with the fact that the bottle comes only just over half full means it can get used up very quickly if you have large plants. There are 2 flaps in the lid which allow you to determine how much powder gets puffed out when you squeeze the bottle, I then used the open flap to position the powder all around the base of the plants to ensure all the compost was adequately covered. However this is quite a messy process and I needed to clean up powder which had puffed out too far or become spilt using a damp tissue. Although they are not quite all gone yet they do seem to be lessening in number and easier to catch too as they are not flying off as quickly.I do like the fact that it uses no chemicals and so is organic.

Disappointing - works, but gravel format much better
The biggest pest problem I have had in recent years has been the dreaded fungus gnat. I like to grow plants from seed and cuttings, and often lose the majority to fungus gnats - so depressing when I've put all that effort into doing all the right things. I'm really carefully not to overwater, and put a thick layer of gravel on the top of the pots, but the pesky little fungus gnats still manage to get at the roots of my seedlings! I also have lots of houseplants and have the same problem with them.I garden organically so always look for natural products, and this year I have discovered diatomaceous earth, which is really helping to keep my fungus gnat problem under control. I ordered this Fungus Gnat Killer Powder as it looked like it would be easier to use - and go much further - than the gravel/granules type of diatomaceous earth I have had before. You're told to "simply sprinkle the powder evenly over the soil where fungus gnats are active", and further down the page, "lightly dust the surface of the soil in your plant pots". However, the instructions on the bottle tell you to apply a 1-2cm layer! At £14.99 a bottle (only two-thirds full!), that makes it much more expensive than my gravel type of diatomaceous earth. What's more, it's certainly not easier to use as the powder is very fine and flies everywhere, so you need to take it outside. It's messy to apply, and difficult to control where the powder is going, so it tends to cover the plant as well as the compost.Overall then, I'm really disappointed with this format of diatomaceous earth, and won't be buying it again. It seems to be as effective as the granules, as I'm already seeing the fungus gnats moving elsewhere, but it's expensive, messy, and certainly not as decorative as the granules.

You only get one bottle but it works.
As well as filling the tops of all my pots with 1cm or so of this stuff, I ceased watering for 2 weeks (and lost one small plant).I've since given in and watered from the bottom only.It isn't instant as it disrupts the lifecycle of the pests rather than knocking them down dead. Basically, they cannot multiply as they need damp conditions to do this.Yellow sticky traps confirm the eradication of the little annoyances; completely clear when they used to be coated with them.Nice that a dry material is effective rather than using chemicals.(Although I wonder if cat litter wouldn't have the same effect?)
