Product Description Import only two CD collection. Respect features all the classic songs by the original Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Rooted in a gospel tradition that was to inform her soul-charged sound, her impact on American pop music was profound. It was the run of late-'60s Atlantic hits featured here ('Respect', 'Chain of Fools', 'I Say a Little Prayer') that made her a star, but as this Best of shows, there was plenty more to come. Aretha was discovered all over again by a new generation in the '80s thanks to her role and performance ('Think') in the hit musical the Blues Brothers. Riding high on a wave of success, duets with latter day icons followed like the epic "I Knew You Were Waiting" with stubble-faced George Michael and the anthemic 'Sisters Are Doing It for Themselves' with self-proclaimed diva Annie Lennox. Respect is certainly due to the remarkable talent of Aretha Franklin and this double disc anthology thoroughly represents the diva in her full majesty. A good summary of one of the voices of the century (4.5*)
Doing a cross-section of work by such a legend as is Aretha Franklin is always a challenge, but this 2002 two-CD compilation fits the bill almost pefectly. Contains practicall all essential tracks, starting with "Respect", the best popular song of all time, according to 2021 U.S. Rolling Stone poll. There are other signature tracks by the soul legend, such as "Son of a Preacher Man", "I Say a Little Prayer", "Natural Woman", plus other tracks from her 1967 and 1968 signature albums. "I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You" and "Lady Soul" (probably her two best regular LPs). Apart from other soul classics ("You're All I Need to Get By", "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing", "Something He Can Feel"), you can see her moving on with time into the 1980's and 1990's – also by way of duets with Eurythmics, George Michael, Elton John and George Benson. And even the good Lauryn Hill-penned song ("A Rose Is Still a Rose") can be found. True, listening to the product in its entirety can be overwhelming, but this collection is one to return to regularly for a long, long time.

Not what I ordered but still good!
Original selection not available, seller provided alternative after first checking with me. It was a double album of 30 hits and covered a very similar (but extended) track listing - 'Aretha Franklin 30 Greatest Hits'.

A very rich souffle
This exhaustive CD collection yo-yos in price a great deal from budget to full-price, so pick the right time to purchase! I didn't especially want to purchase a double CD of Aretha Franklin's music but in order to obtain all her hits (and actually there aren't really all that many of them)this seemed to be the best option available of the compilations currently around.Actually, this purchase was an eye-opener, for the lady can really sing and brings out emotion in a song. Very gutsy style, and when her material is great eg Say a little prayer, Respect, Sisters are doing it for themselves, I knew you were waiting for me, et al Aretha Franklin is out there on her own. Just compare her version of I say a little prayer with Dionne Warwick's weaker original! In terms of music quality, the first CD is outstanding; even songs I didn't recognise grab attention immediately. The second CD is where the quality starts slipping away, but the CD begins and ends well with Aretha's more upbeat hits, leaving only the middle part soggy - like a deflated souffle! Even her fantastic voice begins to grate, perhaps a double CD is just too much of a good thing. In my opinion this collection would have been better edited down to a single CD, keeping all the big hits and weeding out the filler. But I am a casual fan, and for a true Aretha lover I think this collection would be sheer delight from begining to end.
