Good value - nice instrument
I bought this despite the odd adverse review. A discounted price did help in making the decision. It arrived promptly and well packed. The item was as described. One downside was that it arrived without any care instructions, but a quick search on the internet solved that so if you are new to these do have a look around for this advice before you start. On arrival the foot joiny was a little loose, but after the application of a few layers of cork grease these are now nice and tight (firm). After the first few oilings of the barrrel I did get some wood dust out, but this has stopped. As some have noted, the finger holes are quite widely spaced, but I can manage these. If in doubt, try and find one in a music shop to look at.As for the sound, once you have mastered the breathing it is really quite nice. Would i recommend them? Yes.

Good for medium to large hands.
I got this used in good condition. But it is not suitable for my small hands and fingers. It will take a lot of practice for me to keep the holes covered properly. I'm having difficulty producing a beautiful sound, it still comes and goes, perhaps with more practice that will come too, and perhaps more experienced flutists will not experience problems with that. Sometimes I get a high pitch and sometimes I get a low pitch. I think eventually I will enjoy this, but have decided to learn the skills on an inexpensive fife and piccolo and then transfer over to this when I have acquired more skill. Though I also imagine doing more research and upgrading to a better flute with keys next time once I have spent more time learning the smaller instruments. Being inexperienced, I decided to grade on the high side. I do not fault it that my hands are small, but I would warn another person with small hands or thin fingers that it is difficult to play for that reason.

I would need bigger hands!
Sorry but the quality of this was atrocious and we sent it back. Perhaps we were unlucky but the flute we received had glue around the joints and was poorly finished. The other problem for me, as a female with small hands, is that the holes are very widely spaced on this flute so handling it proved difficult by comparison with my old silver flute or pearwood treble recorder. The tone wasn't great either; although it may be unfair to compare with two ostensibly classical instruments I felt that even for a folk instrument I wanted something better. For us, not a good buy but others seem to have got along with this instrument so I suppose it's horses for courses.

Quality Instrument
A well made instrument and at a very good price when I purchased mine. The joints are very tight but I use my saxophone cork grease to ease assembly. Ensure that you oil the wood (inside and out) with Almond oil, to prevent splitting. I bought a metal Selmer Flute cleaning rod to make the job easier. Not an easy instrument to play at first, and certainly more difficult than a Boehm system flute.
