Not new because of "0" hours
Re-wrting this entire review to reflect my more upto date experience. Out of 12 drives, 5 have failed from March 2024 to December 2024. So that's gone from a 45% failure rate down to 42%. These HDDs come wiped, showing 0 hours and good health in CrystalDiskInfo. This doesn't make them new as some like to claim in these reviews and is not indicative of the actual health. To verify the health, for a healthy 12 TB drive, it will take over 50 hrs with a combination of a write and read test and short and extended/long self test done via HardDiskSentinel. This is my new method of testing and has saved me from more potential headaches. Simply running CrystalDiskInfo and CrystalDiskMark isn't enough to verify the drive is good. I'm not entirely sure about the capabilities of the people who have done the refurbishing of these drives, whether it's due to not doing the job properly if at all or if these drives became bad in transit or a combination of multiple things. I however feel more confident in going forward after doing a 50+ hour test.Either way, if buying these drives, I advise investing in HardDiskSentinel, as it allows me to test via USB, so I can test them before installing them into my homelab. Still far cheaper than buying them new and you can get bad ones sent back ASAP instead of potentially losing data down the road. I lost data because of an extra drive failing during resilvering, thankfully I salvaged most of it but I learned from my mistakes and so I have improved my testing methodology. As for ProtectMyBubble. They informed me that these drives in the UK come with a 1 year warranty, so I got money back for all of the 4 drives. ProtectMyBubble were contacted by email and were rapid with their responses but once they got the policy numbers, the responses took longer. As my drives failed due to hardware defaults rather than accidental, they referred me back to Amazon to claim a refund. Didn't think what I consider used items would have a 1 year warranty but was thankful to be wrong. Also you have 30 days from the date of purchase to buy insurance in the UK, so you don't have to buy it at the same time as the hard drives. saves hassle of having to cancel an insurance policy if the drives arrive DOA as Amazon doesn't always automatically cancel the insurance.
