Better than any detective story
This is without doubt one of the best books I have read . A real life detective story for ecstasy barons with more twists and turns than Raymond Chandler or the like have ever written .More concise than Mr Nice and with so much detail and honesty I read this in 3 sittings .In short it is 'unputdownable' .I wish Howard all the very best and hope that we see more from the man who encapsulated my generation .

WHAT A GUY.....
Enjoy the 80's rave scene? Like a recreational smoke? Ever found yourself out of your depth, caught up in something illicit? Then you will love this book. I couldn't care less how much of it is true and how much is fiction,, it's still a great read. Mister Marks had the last laugh and has taken to his grave, the secret of whether or not it really happened. As another reviewer put it, we don't need a court case/trial for us to understand just what a clever and shrewd bugger he was. My lasting memory is of the late, great legendary man himself, sat reading fairy stories to children at a summer festival. The kids sat in silence at his feet, staring up at him, enchanted by his ability to conjure up a scene. So let's just leave it there, shall we children....?

After reading Mr Nice when it first came out I was a fan
After reading Mr Nice when it first came out I was a fan. Howard Marks charisma lept off the page, his life story so incredibly interesting, and told with such ease. He always seemed to have such control over 'matters', an ability to read people. This book, his last, I found just as interesting. A certain sadness creeps out - a man slightly lost and drawn into the only life he really knew. Such intelligence, such charm, he really was Mr Nice. May he rest in peace.

A fitting epitaph for Mr Nice
An enjoyable follow on from Marks' autobiography Mr Nice. Great story told his his own style that weaves fact and possible fiction into a tale fit for the larger than life story of Howard Marks

Very enjoyable book
Great book. In the same mold as Mr Nice and I enjoyed it just as much. Enjoyable story and gives a slightly rawer view of the world he inhabited.Sad ending and a shame there will be no more books from him.

A disappointment after "Mr Nice"
Found "Mr Nice" an entertaining and fascinating read, but was left disappointed by "Mr Smiley: My Last Pill and Testament". Whereas the former is mostly credible, and offers an often charming exploration of Marks' psyche, the latter is obviously largely a fiction - with some factual anchors - and is much less compelling as a result. It also lacks the anecdotes and philosophical asides that punctuate "Mr Nice"; precisely the elements that piqued my interest in Marks as an individual, and which motivated me to read the sequel.Readable, but nothing more.

Sorry Howard not great
Howard Marks is a legend in his own right. Mr Nice was a great read however I found that Mr Smiley was not so and I was rather disappointed.
