Not a smooth surface but a quality product
I thought these would be smooth and easy to wipe down. They are woven and require a bit more elbow power to clean but the color is great and they seem strong and have held up to hot bowls and plates.

These placemats are nice looking and easy to clean; just make sure you clean foods that stain easily (like red kool-aid) immediately. I made the mistake of waiting and it didn’t come all the way off.
