a modern classic in bass pedagogy
Student or Professional looking to brush up your thumb position? Look no further.... Chris's book takes the reader from the very basics, through to the very complex technical degrees of thumb position on the double bass. The easy to follow layout, language, pictures and contextual examples, make for the ultimate guide for anyone of any standard on the instrument.I believe this book will become a standard in bass pedagogy. It can be used as a teachers tool to guide very young students through the fundamentals in an easy and straight forward way, as well as for advanced conservatoire students looking for a sound method and approach to assist with the most challenging music in our repertoire.I admire the easy to follow step by step nature of this book, meaning that the reader can pick it up and 'find their level', and take things from there. As a professional orchestral player, I will use this book regularly to remind myself of the fundamentals, and keep in shape through a selection of my favourite exercises within the book.I am sure that even the most advanced solo players will find the book interesting and learn new things especially towards the end of the book where the more complex technical discussion are. For example, I really like the conversation of the solution to do with baring fourths using the thumb and 1st finger, as well as the utilisation of the 4th finger in thumb position.
