The quality of these pencils surprised me. For close to 50 years I’ve been buying the same, German made brand of drawing pencils, the blue ones…This is a wider range than I typically use, (although I tend more towards harder leads, 6H and 8H at times, but rarely softer than 4B. In any case, I spent a bit of time drawing squiggles and smearing, etc. on some low tooth scrap paper, to get a feel for these. They are very similar in feel to the way the blue pencils feel, and the hardness grading, at least up to 6B (the softest I had), was a good match. The graphite color is about as neutral as I’d expect. The wood is also nice; with a sharp sharpener, the peels of wood are nice and smooth.One of my surprises, and what has generally kept me buying premium drawing pencils, is how well centered these pencils are. You know, you go to sharpen a pencil and the lead is so far off center that you get a very lopsided cone at the end. Not with these.And I know, because the first box I opened had an 8B where the HB should’ve been (so two of the 8Bs, no HB) and so I opened up the other 17 sets to check them. All the others were correct, and since they were opened, I checked for centering. I was going to dink a star off for the one mix up, and then thought about how nice these were, especially for the cost—and decided 5 stars was fair.
