Truly indespensible.
The thing with Michael Franks is, you either get him or you don't. To the untrained or unfocused ear, Mr. Franks is a light-weight jazz vocalist. To someone who is paying attention, there is a lot of word-play in his turns of clever lyric and very subtle sexiness via his playful spirit. This collection, which I feel is a great companion to his U.S. "Hits" compilation, shows that his success lies in his consistency over the last 3 decades. From the opening notes of "Eggplant" you develop a sense of what this guy is all about. After all, who else could deliver a line like, "Maybe it's the scallions, maybe she's Italian- I can't reveal her name, but eggplant is her game" and not come off sounding like a total idiot. No one, but Michael Franks.Mr. Franks uses common, everyday objects as metaphors as in the song "Baseball" or "When the Cookie Jar is Empty". Unless you really care, you will miss the sheer poetry that is set out for you. I was 11 years old when I got turned onto "Burchfield Nines", Michael Franks's 1978 release. Even at that age- I knew that there was something special and unique about his music. It has a sense of style that is his very own. I honestly feel that (and this is in my own experience) this is the perfect intimate evening disc. You'll find yourself becoming increasingly playful as the evening progresses and what you do from there is up to you... whether it's "filling the cookie jar", "cooking eggplant" or walking through the "Jardin Botanico".This is a truly superb and INDESPENSIBLE listening experience for the sophisticated listener.

One of my "Best of All Time"
I'm surprised to see that there are only two reviews here, at the time I'm writing this. His music is a unique mix of jazz (both old and comtemporary,) bossa and pop. The musicians you hear on this album offer you an extraordinary sonic pleasure, and Franks' voice/singing will get your spirit uplifted just as much as you need it to be.I agree with the other reviewer saying that it's up to you how much you can notice and appreciate his artistry in the works, but at the same time I want to assure that Michael Franks can be a great easy-listener, too.It would be great if more and more people start to discover and realize his geneous, just like I did a couple of years ago. I felt like I had been a total ignorant music-fan when I first heard his music.

I start my M.Franks collection back in Ukraine, where 1 CD is 1/3 of typical monthly salary...I had 5 of them there... His poetry and music is OUTstanding/standing far out of line/ and totally UNIQUE.
