Best books to teach reading
I have been homeschooling a lot of kids for many, many years. I have tried my fair share of reading programs and always come back to Explode the Code. It is teaches quickly and thoroughly, it has enough repetition to retain without boring the kids. The teacher book is an absolute must. Some have sight words to go over and all of them have teaching tips for vocabulary and writing. It pairs up pretty well with the Bob books or Sonlight K readers to reinforce the concepts and to have them read small books. Explode the Code has flash cards too, one of my kids benefited but the rest didn’t need them, the books themselves had enough review.

Outstanding Phonics Series
I have used the Explode the Code set for my two kids and it is excellent. Logical, teaches each skill from a variety of angles and includes a lot of repetition so that each skill is fully absorbed before we go to the next one. I did buy the "1/2" books also but rarely had to use them for extra work. The series is outstanding and if you do a few pages a day from "A to Z" you end up with excellent readers. I will note that the series focuses on decoding - making sure your child can read every word accurately and fluently. However, you do have to address reading comprehension and vocabulary separately. (That being said, my kids did learn some new words in this book too - sometimes it's a "stretch" to find words with the letter combinations needed for the lesson it seems). This series is so good - we tried a lot of different things, but this is what stuck. I recommend it to everyone!

Short and fun
My kids love these books. They have helped with handwriting. My kids like that they can either finish the whole week in one day or spread it out during the week.

Perfect Education Companion
I teach the MTA program for dyslexic kids at school and decided to buy this set of books to go along with my lessons. They are a perfect addition when my kids are not quite ready to move to the next lesson and will reinforce what I have taught.

We love explode the code!
We homeschool and bought this for our 1st grader last year and now that he’s in 2nd grade. We love the review that it gives! I have found that starting the 1st book in first grade is the perfect time! We tried beginning the first book in kindergarten but it was too advanced. The only complaint we have it there is no color on the pages—it’s all black and white. Will definitely continue to buy Explode the Code!
